I just started working at a boutique-ish guitar/bass pedal company and we use the Aoyue 936 which is apparently a clone of the Hakko 936. You can even use Hakko tips on it.

It's pretty damn fantastic. If you're looking at that Hakko - check out Aoyue for about half the price.

Tough to say. Do you have anything else that takes 1/8" cables to see if that whole thing is passing sound? That may very well be the problem.

I would try some compression on the overheads and the guitar so you aren't working the limiter so hard to bring stuff up to decent levels.

Did you do clean install ? or just installed over your old OS ?. That's an awesome question.
