From my experience, most drywall contractors start the freaking out process with requirements to leave a 1/4" gap all around, backer rod, etc. These are foreign concepts to them. I advocate simply not asking them to do anything that does not translate into an actual benefit . In my opinion the gap, ...

This is another example of an extensional (surface) damping compound. They work. certainly, however an extensionally damped system is much less efficient than a constrained layer system. MJL mentioned this may work as well as simply adding mass. And he's so right. Their wall tested to STC52. Take th...

Green Glue works on a solid acoustic principle, versus "acoustic" paint and lead and heavy vinyl sheets. Well, those have a principle too, but they're not massive enough to do much. The cheapest and most effective mass is drywall. I can't understand why anyone would pay ten times more for special m...

Eddie, have you developed a game plan yet? Insulation is intuitive but doesn't a whole lot, unless it's several feet thick. You really might want to look at a lot of decoupled, damped mass.

I would opt to attach perpendicular furring strips on the joists. Every 24". Then use double 5/8" drywall.

The homasote, soundboard, etc offers so little benefit...

Is that insulation attached to studs? There's a reasonable air cavity back there that has largely uncompressed insulation?

Aren't there NRC values for the various materials online? Generally there's one product that has all the buzz, but other products have the same physical properties and are less costly.

My understanding is that in a wall with single drywall on one side and double on the other it makes no difference which side is doubled in terms of transmission reduction; it should be the same either way. In a lab where flanking isn?t an issue, this is true. However if the more formidable double d...

A few thoughts. You'd want the double drywall on the sound producing sound, so I assume the isolation is to shield you from outside noise? What is the reason for the sway brace? The walls will stiffen a great deal with the drywall application. I think I'm missing something, which is why I'm asking. ...

Doors and ventilation are the two biggest flanking paths. Outlets and gaps behind baseboard are next.
