Old strings FTW
Then again, my favorite sounding production guitar so far is a Baby Martin. Go figure.

I know you mentioned low-learning curve, but I have to recommend Reason. In the beginning of my recording engineering (which was mostly lo-fi), Reason came with all of the tools to make really cool beats. The coolest part is that the tools in Reason allow you to manipulate any of their patches to ma...

I just simply record a band, and I've got a '91 Soundcraft Spirit Studio 24x8x2 that's a pretty incredible board with everything working perfect except the XLR jacks on tracks 1 and 19 you gotta angle right (you can work around it easily). I do have a Mackie Onyx board, and if you have a good signal...

So I've got new tracks up on myspace.com/bigbluebus09 The only thing is that the song "Computers Don't Cry" is abysmal as I need to learn to use Logic's vocoder properly. I can't seem to record with it directly, and the mix is terrible, and the guitarist hasn't played on it so I just shoved a guitar...

I've never tried Wavelab but I have used Izotope at a studio I used to work at for in-house mastering. It works well for what it's worth, but depending on your budget it doesn't fix every problem, and it isn't going to make a shitty mix sound better unless you really know what you're doing. Having s...

Being a budget engineer / musician and all, I fell into the whole MXL 990 trap. There have been a few cases where I got really, really good results out of it. At the time I didn't know the freakin' difference (this is 2003, I was 16 I think) but for some reason it works best over any mic on this one...

I'm sort of where you were not to long ago, and I can comment on the HS50m pair. I bought a pair from the lead singer of the band Ghost in the City, and like you I did not have room treatment (at the time). They are a bit harsh but they have a mid-cut switch on the back that makes them more pleasura...

Re: What are some of the most "poorly engineered"
Fiery Furnace's Bitter Tea, which is incredibly brittle and bright, IMO. Could be a mastering thing I suppose. It's alright for a song or two, but man, that album punishes the ears, which is a shame because the songs are good. Yeah I really need to figure out who did that. That album is the only in...

For Fender amps I use Amplitube Fender. I run guitars through an ART Pro Channel tupe preamp straight into Amplitube Fender and people ask me how I mic my Fender guitar cabs! I have not tried the POD, and I have not tried the original Amplitube, but there are some amazing tones in there that sound l...

Re: CPU speeds?
the laptop i'm looking at has specs such as: # 1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo Processor # 4GB of DDR3 RAM # 320GB 7200rpm HDD would this be good enough to do some music stuff in REAPER and Audiomulch? They both don't seem to be that resource intensive. Plus, I also use my own custom rolled version ...

I have a Spirit Studio 24x8x2 and after having it on sale for a while and not being able to get what I know it's worth, I've decided to try to breath new life into it. I've used it for years and love the the sounds that I've gotten from it. I only started trolling the boards yesterday. I loved usin...
