Allen & Heath analog desk with DAW integration

If I were in the market for a new, affordable recording console, I would definitely consider this: http://www.allen-heath.com/UK/DisplayProduct.asp?pview=115 http://www.allen-heath.com/AHImages/GS-R24.jpg Designer's Notes The original concept for the GS-R24 was for a larger version of the ZED-R16 wi...

In my opinion, a good upright (not console) will sound much better recorded than a baby grand. Personally, I would never buy a baby grand. It might "look" like a grand, but it won't sound like one. Go to a reputable piano store and try every single piano that you can afford. Even brand-new pianos of...

Or an M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge connected to a PreSonus Digimax FS will give you 8 channels of preamps plus 24 leftover channels of ADAT. $1000 total for new units. Plus, it's Pro Tools compatible if you ever want to go that route. Will the Lightbridge be stable with the MacBook Pro? Don't know my...

Personally, I'd recommend that you get an audio interface that uses ExpressCard instead of FireWire. (Read the Gear Geeking column in the Mar/Apr issue of Tape Op about FireWire.) For example, the RME HDSPe ExpressCard w/ Multiface II bundle goes for about $1200 street: http://www.rme-audio.de/en_pr...

Review of ZED-14 in the March/April issue.

I heard from A&H that all the other ZEDs were being released into the US slowly. For example, the 428 was only announced for US availability this week I think.

I saw pre-production units of the Rupert Neve SE mics at the last NAMM show. They look unbelievably dope. If you have 'em in your mic locker, your clients will want to use them on looks alone. I'm sure they're going to start showing up in Hip Hop videos soon.

Yeah, but then take that printed reverb track, duplicate it, and pitch shift the copy back down an octave... or even two octaves.. and mix together. Or better yet.... Was this mockery? Why? As others have mentioned, I'm not one for mockery, but I am one for taking a great idea and springboarding of...

Or for you tape folks using a (Real) room verb... Run your source sound in at double speed, mic the room. Then slow tape back down and VOILA you have lengthened your rooms decay. My "echo chamber" sounds a bit like a well, but hey, it was fun! Johnny7 ps. This is a fun thread I do this with springs...

Best way to set phase (once everything is positioned correctly) is to create an overlap between the subwoofer pass band and the main monitor passband. Then output a sine wave within the shared pass band (so that both the sub and the mains are outputting the sine wave). Vary the phase until you have ...

Sorry for not being clear!!! Let me clarify. I agree that it's extremely important to be geeky about subwoofer configuration. In fact, I would argue that before you even decide what crossover frequency to utilize, you must spend some time measuring for room modes and then deciding not only crossover...

Or better yet, time reverse the dry track to which you want to add the reverb. Then do all this. Then re-reverse the dry and wet tracks. And you will g...

Woah, you're being overgeeky for no reason. A 60 Hz LPF is commonly 3 dB down at 60 Hz.

Oh, and the shortest ADAT cables I've been able to find are 18''. I got mine from You-do-it, who carry many different lengths.

I've bought about thirty IEC power cables of various lengths under 3 ft from You-do-it . But always by walking into the store. It might be worth calling them to see if they'll ship to you. Much cheaper than the Hosa IEC cables you find at your big-box music store. You can also get short cables from ...

I've had the battery die mid-recording many many times... yeah, the R-09 has crappy battery life. BUT, not once was the file unplayable!!!!

The partially-recorded files ALWAYS played back fine in Windows Media Player after inserting the SD card into my laptop.
