thanks for your response. the noise went away when I used TRS -> XLR cable throughout the signal path, I guess i was using a TS cable somewhere even during troubleshooting. dumb move on my part.

I am looking for 1/2" tape, preferably locally in Chicago. I recently purchased a Tascam 58-OB and am in need of reels. I believe it was biased for Quantegy tape, but am unsure if this will matter much.

Looking for new or slightly used condition.
