I've used this a few times and it seems to work pretty well, especially on the heavier garage-rock stuff...ditto on doing a couple different passes at different settings.

+1 on silverface super reverb- this thing sounds great on lots of slide instruments, lap steel and dobro too.

Royer R101?

Just saw Royer's press release about their new mic...anyone know if it's available for sale yet? Or has used one? Looks similar to the R121 but at a lower price point...any more info on the differences would be appreciated!

I've done this with an LDC on vocals and a ribbon on the guitar- a fairly bright acoustic- and it worked great. Null point of Royer 121 about 8-10 inches off the 12th fret. Nice room tones and it kept the guitar's upper-mids under control.

I definitely second a revival of "Records that Made Me Want to Record!" I remember this from TapeOpCon '07 and it was really inspirational. Good call Mark!

Most often a Wunder CM7 into a Voxbox...although I do have one client who insists on using the same mic with a Wunder PEQ1 and a Vari-Mu. Sounds great on his voice.

Thicker cymbals, mono OH or a dynamic mic could work- I would definitely start with thicker cymbals and yes, have the drummer listen back to the way he plays! Also I'm not sure about the size of your tracking room (living room?) but if you've got enough space between the kit and the walls try the Gl...

This might work, but my first instinct would be to reach for a meaty compressor to add color- without slamming the signal coming out of the pre, unless that's what you're going for...
