Sorry to resurrect this older thread, but I wanted to add a couple of thoughts about the VS recorders, since I'm the moderator of the 16/18xx forum over at VS-Planet. I agree with dirk and linus - I can't stand the summing bus of my 1680. It's cramped and small-sounding, to my ear. I've integrated a...

Anyone try recording vocalists without headphones?
I have a problem when it comes to recording my own vocals: I'm deaf in one ear, and have been since I was very young. It's never been a problem for me particularly; but I find I'm not really able to get my vocals to "feel" right when I'm recording myself singing. When I play live, I really hit it ha...

Re: Guitars: New, used, or vintage
There's a friend of a friend of mine at www.guitargai.com. He sells Japanese guitars - Tokais, Burnys (sp), Orvilles - that look pretty nice. I've always wanted a 335 from him, but never really got the scratch together. Something else always intervenes. Anyhow - he sells on eBay too, but usually has...

Re: playing bass versus playing everything...
I love being a bass player. Being the crossroads between the pure rhythm of a great drummer and the melodic content of a keyboard or guitar - and thus helping to guide the whole feel and groove of a tune - is incredibly satisfying. Plus, when you crank your bass rig, it's exciting and earth shaking,...

Re: Cool Beatles Pic....
That's really a cool picture, WOW. There's some interesting stuff there - one thing, it seems like Paul was on the end most of the time, with George between him and John - but here, Paul's in the middle (and I bet that's his rig next to Ringo too). I was thinking about that while watching the Anthol...

Re: Articulate Live Vocal Mic?
You could try the Audio Technica AE series. I have an AE3300 for live gigs that I like pretty well. I think the capsule is similar to the AT4033, so if you don't like that mic, you might not like the AE. I got mine for less than $200 on eBay brand new in the box.

Re: Any Suzuki Method former scholars out there?
I was a Suzuki violin student. I started in 1965, when I was four years old. My second teacher, who was my teacher for a long time, was Anastasia Jempelis, who I think is now 'revered' as one of the Founders - that is, one of the original half-dozen Suzuki teachers in the United States. There was a ...

Ampeg fliptop or direct. Or both. I usually go direct because I don't have a fliptop, and my Ashdown ABM combo is tough to drag up to my recording space.
I've used an Ampeg fliptop on a couple of records and it's always sounded great.

Re: Classic recordings that are out of tune
well, regarding that first Beatles record, John Lennon had a horrible head cold and was using something called Zubes - probably like Halls or Sucrets or something - all through the session. Which explains why his vocals sound so rough. You can really hear it on 'Anna', I think. When I saw this threa...

Re: Alternate tunings
David Crosby used EADGAD a lot. That's the one for Guinnevere and Deja Vu. Sometimes I'll tune my guitar weird and play regular standard tuning chords, just to see what happens. You'll get really crazy stuff that way - like in EADGAD, if you play a standard G chord (muting the low A string) you get ...

Re: Cort Earth 1000 Accoustic as good as a Martin or Taylor?
My Martin D-35 is really hard to record unless there aren't a lot of tracks. It's a great guitar, huge sounding, but a pretty complex tone. My little Seagull S6+ Folk recorded GREAT before its untimely demise. I just bought a Taylor 314 that I love to play. I haven't recorded it yet. I tried a pile ...

Re: AW4416 and patchbay can anyone help
I'm not sure I understand the setup as you've laid it out so far. If it were me, in the back, I might connect the top connectors to the *outputs* from the various preamps (looks like an MP20, an RNP, and the Sytek). I might then normal those to the first eight inputs of the AW - that is, the bottom ...

Re: Live acoustic guitar mic. Suggestions?
Playing live at the venerable Club Passim in Cambridge as an acoustic lead player, I was mic'd with an Oktava MK012. Sounded great. That was before I installed a Baggs Dual Source setup. I think that's a GREAT sounding live mic/pickup combo. I put a K&K Trinity in my 74 Martin D-35. The K&K has a mo...

Re: Silk & Steel Acoustic Strings
These are a must on old guitars before trussrods. I have a coworker who's father-in-law owns a guitar that my coworker brought in for me to look at - it was a 1931 Gibson parlor-sized guitar, I forget the model. I tried to put some regular strings on it and looked like the neck was going to snap, so...
