Re: The Tascam 388

Heyy, first post here, thanks to everybody who's contributed to this thread in the past, I've read through all 37 pages of it. :worthy: So I am borrowing a 388 from a friend who is "borrowing" it from his friend who probably forgot about it. This thing hasn't been used probably for at least 8 years...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

My strategy for direct electric guitars (TBH, unless I am recording someone else, direct is my jam) is either 1. Guitar - pedals - Two Notes Cab M+ into computer 2. Guitar - pedals - amp - Two Notes Torpedo Live into computer 3. Guitar - modeler - into computer I personally am a big fan of #1 especi...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

I haven’t used every di known to man, but a range from $10 ones to $500 ones to those built in to $2000 preamps...and I’ve never been convinced by any of them that much mojo was gained by the direct box itself. Used Most of the standards. A lot of it sure seems like marketing, whatever I grabbed did...

Re: Are the loudness wars over?

As a side bar to that, anyone notice the shift in streaming television? When my family HAD to have Disney Plus for their entertainment needs I noticed right away that whoever is in charge of audio over there was making some bold choices. Their content sounds QUIET compared to a lot of oversmashed k...

Re: Gibson buys Mesa-Boogie

Maybe they can make some “les Paul” finished recto cabinets and further dilute both brands... Mesa is actually the only “real” amp I have at the moment. I don’t really see what Gibson gains by acquiring all of these classic non competing brands over the years just to kill them. Why don’t they do wha...

Re: bass drum mic - front or back?

As always...it depends.

Especially if bleed into the kick mic is a concern. But yeah I’ve done both, I usually will go in the bass drum unless the head is on / no hole.

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....

I have so many because they vary, humbuckers, jazz, PJ, active vs. passive, and strings; one has a drop-D tuner. The two best are the fretless and the Steinberger - the latter is a step above due to its set-up and flats. But they are all fun, all sound good, all portable and light and ergonomic, ot...

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....

I've been thinking about looking for a bass guitar strictly on ergonomics - I still have shoulder damage from years of playing upright and my old P-bass. I'm much happier not playing bass at all right now, but I'd like to be able to do it again without the pain. I highly reco the Hohner BA or the S...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?

Second question - I wouldn’t overthink it. We are spoilt by choices today, with a million neve clones at every price point...one could and often does debate the merit of each one to death. When we are talking about clones, there must be a lot of similarities under the hood, but presumedly there are ...

Maybe parallel processing? Or maybe the band passed track BW main, and make the full frequency 100% wet on a reverb? Vice Versa?

When I’ve been interviewed on podcasts, it’s been over Skype. That’s probably the easiest way.

Roland Rubix44 interface. Unusual in this day and age because it has no built-in stuff that needs to be accessed by a specific application. All the control are hardware the USB is generic, so I should be able to use it with anything. Linux and Reaper is known to work. I can also use it with my iPad...

Re: Affordable "Vintage " Midi key/synth

Realistically, most any workstation from the past 15+ years probably has passable sounds.

You can get a Korg Triton for almost nothing. Emu Vintage Keys. Alesis Fusion. Nord Electro. Korg SV1.

iPad plus korg gadget.

Re: recreating demoes and "demo-itis"

I love demos, rough mixes, and for the same reasons I love (recording) concerts either properly or bootlegging them, and I absolutely do listen to them again, for all their flaws. One of the best functions to come out of digital recording is how I can (and do) save every revision in its own file so ...

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise

I don’t use it either. My guess is some plug-in designer is trying to help you recognize the difference between the stock dynamics plugins and their magic algorithms. So you know it’s different and “analog”... Sort of like making a weird skewmorphic GUI because no one would be able to hear th...
