Re: Taking a specific vocal sound to live settings

The more simple you keep it the less likely you'll run into issues. If you've already got your own fx and whatever, yeah something like the Mixing Link or Keymaster work well. If you haven't bought anything yet, keep in mind that a lot of self contained modeling units have a mic input, preamp, multi...

Re: tricks to make stereo pads more interesting in the mix?

For creating space, I’m sure you’ve tried sidechaining against other stuff, and also Trackspacer is useful for this. Assume I know nothing and tell me what kinds of things you like to sidechain (compressor i assume?) to I'm coming out of a more "real instruments" kind of production style and moving...

Re: tricks to make stereo pads more interesting in the mix?

One thing I like about Unfiltered Audio’s plugins is that they have a modulation area where you can bring in LFOs and sequencers and envelope followers, etc...and patch those into any parameter in the plugin. Sure, kind of like automation, but probably faster to do a lot of things or where you don’t...

Re: Tascam 388 Muddy Recording

In addition to cleaning procedure, demagging is important user maintenance, depending on the frequency of use if not done can be attributed to muddy sound. All of this is covered thoroughly elsewhere, including the manual. Old/worn tape can do this too, especially if it’s shedding. It’s also likely ...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

It’s not unreasonable to assume that a FireWire port or its controlling logic could be on its way out. I take it that the computer itself must be getting old if it still has a FireWire port. Why my old Mac Pro has FireWire and USB cards installed...not because the ports are dead but I do notice issu...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

Is there a problem with your system’s (FireWire, usb?) port your hard drive is plugged into?

Also, what if you create a new session and then import all the session data?

Re: Patchbay plans/expansion to digital

I probably wouldn’t trouble with wiring both the tape out and PGM out for the 388, I can’t imagine a lot of scenarios where you’d need both? Or the PGM in? I’ve always just used the line ins, I think... The insert send and receive have to be wired a certain way, i don’t remember, half normal may be ...

Re: Tons of Plugin Deals Right Now. Any Suggestions?

Black Friday is generally the best for plugin sales, I think I got the entire Soundtoys 5 bundle for like $200 a couple years ago. It’s pretty cool, though i think the regular price of $500 is a bit pushing it these days when there’s so much quality competition. So while Decapitator is fine and all,...

Re: Archives

I love Tape Op. I love Tape Op Magazine. I'm saying this 2 times before I ask, why is it so hard to get to archived articles at TapeOp.com? I just tried to get to one from a link that was posted on FB. I had to "sign in" to get to it then the whole article wasn't even there? It was a paywall. Maybe...

I use Neutron 2 as my general purpose. Not strictly EQ, but tons of utility out of this.

I was always under the impression that FOH guys hated it when talent shows up with those things, but I could be way off. I haven't done FOH for years. (Decades?!)
I believe Death By Audio suggests that as a selling point.

What could possibly go wrong?

Re: Death by Audio “Echo Master” vs Voco-Loco as vocal chain ?

I get the impression that the Echo Master is based off a PT2399 chip, which if that is the case IMHO there are far cheaper ways to get that. The voco loco seems more immediately useful and has more control for tone shaping, there are also other ways to run mics through pedals...pigtronix keymaster, ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Got a real cheap Roland VG8 on eBay, for a slightly newer and better tracking module to plug my synth guitars into. Pretty wild actually, the very best of 1995.

Re: Basic home setup advice

Thanks for the input. I definitely have noticed the Pro Tools complaints, so I think I'll take your advice and look at others. I'm intrigued by Reason. As for the Motu interfaces, where should I start? UltraLite mk4? I’ve not used the Ultralite (i believe the AVB is the most current one) specifical...

Re: Basic home setup advice

Something to keep in mind with UAD stuff is of course their DSP only powers their plugins...nothing else. I would check out their website and instance chart against whatever plugins you intend to run and determine if a Duo will provide enough DSP for your projected needs. My inclination is that it m...
