Re: Tascam 388 one track not recording

Hi, thanks for your reply. Everything on channel 4 works fine. I can use channel 4 to record to any of the tracks, but none of the channels can record to track 4. So we know it's not at the input stage. My guess is that it's somewhere between the track assign and the tape, as the VU meter doesnt wo...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Plugin Alliance had a couple good sales this last week...picked up Unfiltered Audio Triad (crazy, like all their stuff) and Elysia Phil's Cascade (for more subtle processing).

Also Elektron Analog Drive pedals are being blown out, so decided to see how those are...

Re: transparent 500 series pre

I would also recommend a couple that I have used: Danfield Audio MX20vpr (Danfield Audio is out of business so only if you can find one used) - I use this one with my Slate ML-1 and ML-2 mics FiveFish SC-1 mk500 (if you can find them used) or I think the replacement is now SC501. https://www.fivefi...

Re: Would Dumping from an 8 track repeatedly cause sync issues?

If you were to plan on editing the passes to sync together in the DAW, you could de-PITA-ify that process somewhat by giving up another track to provide an identical click track for each pass. snappy-transient quarter notes would then be very easy to visually or automatically line up in the DAW. Yo...

Re: Would Dumping from an 8 track repeatedly cause sync issues?

Yes. It will be a lot of editing...it’s not like one or two simple timing shifts, we are talking hundreds over the course of a few minutes. It depends on how tolerant you are of looseness though...but the above is my experience. I have done exactly what you suggest, for a song we did about 14 tracks...

Re: Tascam 388 one track not recording

I’ve had similar symptoms with a bad/broken/disconnected fader on multiple machines I’ve owned. An easy test would be to take the fader from an adjacent channel and swap with channel 4 and see if it makes any difference.

Can other channels record to track 4?

I’ve got a printed service book, might have a PDF somewhere. But I’m not home right now to look.

Re: Finally Acquired Tascam 388 and need Sage Advice!

I wouldn’t expect the heads to cause issue with tracks 1-4 only, normally...I would take a hard look at the routing/switches though. Example, what happens if you plug into channel 1 and route the signal to record on 5. And what about plugging into channel 5 and routing to channel 1. Etc. I’m surpris...

Don’t get me wrong, would be a cool experience but in order to seriously consider it would need more than a month to find that much cash in a responsible fashion... :alien:

Re: Tips for Dumping 388 > M-Track 8 > Garage Band

Just a last thing: I hope at some point you move from Garageband. There is almost no documentation for this play toy type DAW. Like, no way to know what the meter scale is (there are a ton). I would recommend either you get Reaper (free or cheap), or Pro Tools First (free). Many people on here know...

Re: Listening to mixes in the car...

I put mixes on google drive (in 320kbps mp3 format) and stream over Bluetooth to my car stereo (delightful new phone has no aux out...), all of which adds its own layer of bullshit. Still, I assume this is the way most people listen to music in their car, (at least over Bluetooth, not over google dr...

Re: tracking headphones 2019 (for the performers)

I bought some inexpensive Monoprice headphones for tracking that sound pretty good, are quite inexpensive, hold tight, and have removable cables. https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=120&cp_id=12001&cs_id=1082302&p_id=8323&seq=1&format=2 I have a set of these...they aren't bad, much rather let so...

Re: Is my situation condusive to a Monitor puchase?

I have no experience with sonar works reference software so don’t know how well that works. While it’s certainly possible to mix entirely on headphones (I’ve been there, or lived places where speakers are not an option), it’s easy to get lost in them...I would avoid it if you can, or at least be ch...

Re: Level Standards For Music For Film

Reason #1788 as to why doing the final mix in the same room with the director / responsible party is super important. I don't disagree, the last film I did seemingly was mixed in the eleventh hour on energy drinks in a hotel room or something, so many amateur audio problems that appeared at the pre...
