Could be a floating signal, but normally I'd expect the ring to short to ground if you use a TS cable in a TRS jack. Good reason to use a TS cable unless both ends are TRS; with a TRS cable, the ring is left floating and connected to a multi-foot-long glorified antenna.... :D This may just be me bei...

No chance this is feedback from a plate reverb or similar, is there?
