Re: Slate Everything Bundle

The VTM plug (tape sim) is really useful. It took me a while of A/Bing to figure out what it was doing, it's subtle but you miss it when it's gone. I like to abuse it with snares and other peaky things sometimes, it breaks up in an exciting way. It seems like all of the plugins the offer have some s...

Re: Slate Everything Bundle

I've been using that Slate bundle for a couple months now. I've owned the VCC and VTM plugs for a while, and I use them all the time. In the bundle, I really dig the bus compressors, and most of the VMR modules get use too. It's well worth the subscription fee.

Sounds pretty cool! What sort of processing did you run on the ribbons? Sounds like there's some compression. When I tried this technique, I had to do a lot of low-mid carving and high-end boosting to balance out the ribbons' response, did you have to do the same?

Alex, I have a 7720. I like it, but I haven't played around with it much as a stereo bus comp. I'd be happy to run some samples through at different settings for you sometime.

I have a 7720 and I'm always happy with it. I think it's best feature is the side chain HPF. I use it as a tracking compressor a lot too. Quality-wise, it seems pretty sturdy.

Direct to 2 track recordings

I just read that "Small Change" by Tom Waits was recorded direct to 2 track. I've always been fascinated by that production method... what are some other great straight to 2 track albums?

I don't know about the overheads, but I can't be the only one who gets freaked out seeing the drummers spare sticks rattling around on top of his bass drum at 4:43, right?

Christmas present to myself... Squier Jaguar short scale bass, strung up as a 'piccolo' bass-- still tuned EADG but one octave higher than a standard bass. Really fun for chords! https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/10923589_10203267065932737_8965247780649708571_n...

I did a similar thing with a fathead doing the kick/snare meat and an ev660 as an overhead. It was after reading the "shitty is pretty" article and I was really happy with the results. It took a long time to get the placement just right, but once it was there, the sounds was cool and simple. Especia...

Do you ever use that little CAD mic for the snare? I like it on snare.

If you're not too keen the ins and outs of compression, start with a dbx163. Track bass, vocals, kick and snare with it. It's incredibly simple and neat sounding, but also pretty forgiving. If you want to get the feel for outboard stuff and what it does, ART makes great inexpensive pieces that cover...
