Unapologetic 80s Metal

My band got together in a warehouse to cobble together a handful of songs. In the past we'd rush and say "good enough", and "fix things in post"; this time, we took our time to treat the recording environment, without the rest of the impatient band hanging around doing nothing. In any event, this Me...

Whiskey song

I used to post/prowl around here a lot, until my adult life caught up with me and I had to start dealing with the vagaries of middle age (arthritis, unemployment, vacant staring into the void, etc.), but I was able to catch a little recording/mixing work here here and there. I typically record comma...

I appreciate your feedback. And I think you're quite on point. My thinking is that this recording is basically a rehearsal for the final tracking that's going down next week. Some of the playing here feels a bit unsteady, and some parts are walking over others. I'm looking forward to actually be in ...

Recording live group

I got asked to help record a group for an independent film's soundtrack. The songs were learned on the spot, and the spot happened to be a huge, 1000 square feet space with concrete floors and fabulously high ceilings. The drums had a nice-sized carpet underneath, and the rest of the equipment (guit...

Two Songs in one advice...

I've been mixing/tracking a guy (and have posted old mixes before) who handed me some fairly dense, lush arrangements to sort through. This song in particular begins, in his words, with an Echo and the Bunnymen kind of feel, then ends in one hell of a dense mix. I'd love any feedback about the mix i...

I realized that the vocal has SO much bleed from the rest of the band, so I attempted to tame it somewhat. It was really hard to get a gate to sound seamless, so I just used the ambience as much as I could. Unfortunately, this is a departure from the real dry sound the singer/songwriter wanted, but ...

Frankentracking mix

I posted about "Wimpy drums in a big mix" in the Recording Techniques section, and posted a link (https://soundcloud.com/jhcore/ever-fell-fadeout) to some of the client mix work. This singer/songwriter recorded everything at many, many studios over the country, over a span of several years. The reco...

Thanks. The singer/songwriter is really in to having the drums as smacking and larger than life as can be. We got together this weekend to listen to some mixes on my monitors. My thinking was that having him hear the songs in a higher-fidelity environment might show him how exaggerated the kick is. ...

You're right. I was so caught up in the quiet-loud-quiet dynamic that I lost track of those details. But here's a version with the on-mic mention of a fadeout. My monitors (D5s) don't have a huge low-end imprint, so I had to strap on some on cans to hear how that kick was rattling my jaw. I'm still ...

Thanks! I appreciate the comments. This is still definitely a work in progress, and I'm waiting on the artist's feedback on this initial mix. But in the interim, I can address these concerns that you mentioned. Edit: newer version: https://soundcloud.com/jhcore/ever-fell-v (Early morning mix...might...

Infinite thanks for everyone's advice! I tried pretty much every suggestion and now feel like I'm in the right ballpark. Ultimately, it was a combo of parallel compression, samples snuck in well beneath, reverb tweaking, and some eq. I still feel like the snare is too loud/too trebly, but well beyon...

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, parallel compression! That has definitely served me well in the past. But here's another issue: I rely quite a bit on the room mics and overheads to give me a picture of the kit. With this session, these mic's information is just so minute that I wonder if crushing the su...

Wimpy drums in a big mix

I've been handed quite a few tunes to mix, and there majority of them are quite lush and spacious. I'm having a really good time with them. However, there is one song in particular that I'm having a Hell of a time with. it's a quiet-loud-quiet thing (Tonally/mix-wise, I'm hearing it along the lines ...

Agreed. I have no great need (but desire 's a different story...) to upgrade; that being said, I'm hoping the 3D release might cause the 2D card's price to go down (and as is, I seem to recall it can be found for under $300). My MBP is the last with Firewire, and I figure I'm going to get as much mi...
