I remember mine was a bit noisy. Don't know about mods.
Why not use it the way it is in side-chain tracking instead of on the 2-buss?

I'm bugged by curiosity. How do you play 8 different velocity hits perfectly on the mark and repeat that order 88 times? I have no classical training, of course, and I feel like I'm peeking into the girl's locker room.

I'm sure it would be possible to record multiple passes of cheesy low strings, cheesy hi strings and whatnot on your Yamaha to develop a composite acceptable cheesy mellotron track. Might even be fun. Good luck.
