I had been recording and mixing my own band for a few years and just got done recording and mixing a 3 songs with a very accomplished and famous local engineer/producer. Gear factors aside (trident 80-B for my mixwizard, studer 2" for my Otari MX5050 1/2") what made the results and experience enjoya...

I have been recording tunes for my band for demos, pre-production and reference. The last one I did I bounced into the DAW, did a mix - ok - good etc. Remixed and made it worse (overcooked) Then I ran one straight off the 1/2" 8-track through cheesy outboard - that was the keeper. I work 1,000x quic...

Scodiddly is right on - I do live sound every Sat. at a mid sized club in Seattle. Quick is key - I never spend more than a few moments on a drum or instrument during a check. At least for rock stuff. Nothing (except monitors) really matter before the crowd manifests and "treats" the room. Setting u...

I'd start by sticking a mic in front of everything, pressing record, and sorting it all out later. If it works for punk bands it should be a good starting point for an instrumental rock band...... Seriously though - you can mine loads of good tips about recording any single instrument (or kit of the...

I just whacked a room mic to tape with the DBX 163 (not the "X" - the wood panneled one w/rca i/o) Way better than it should have been! I also have a furman also - boy howdy how that thing sucks! I could turn a pretty nice UA 610 DI bass sound into a squeeky ducke farte (and nothing else despite eff...

Piezos on ac guitar recordings - blame Dave Matthews? I concur that they can be made useable (have to most of the time) with some strenuous EQ cuts but I have to disagree about using fancy Acoustic DIs - I strongly prefer el cheapo passives for piezos. It helps take the nasty plasticky "stink" off o...

Oh boy - DOD FX57 - Hard Rock Distortion I think it is - completely useless unless... You open up the back and detune the trim pots that control the delay clock until you get an audible "feedback" sound - once dialed in the delay length knob on the front of the pedal controls the random delay-pitch ...

I do both and I truly enjoy live work - I am luck though I do Sat. nights only (day job) and at one of the best clubs in town - so lots of great bands. It really does teach you to solve problems fast and can be a confidence booster. I do get the occaisional bit of audience "advice" but mostly people...

Re: Ever blow up a speaker... Just for the helluvit?
I went through a big phase of killing 10" speakers playing guitar with my Traynor Bassmaster head - 90 watts into 2 10's - got old, expensive and I got a 4-10" that can take it. My bassplayer runs a big muff through her Ampeg v-4 1-15" all the time and has yet to kill the 200 watt eminence in it. I ...

Re: Buying a bass cabinet. Should I get a 1x15 or a 4x10?
calling shennanigans on the eminence warning - those speakers are fine, I have done hundreds of gigs on them mixed with old JBL's and they are plenty rugged within their ratings. On the other hand - I can't recall ever using a Peavy speaker that sounded like anything I liked.
