Unique Sounding Albums / Albums With Cool Sound Design?
The tow chain thread got me thinking about how much I like albums with unique sounds. I'm all for recording to capture the sound of a real live band, but I also dig recordings that sound like nothing else. I think it's unfortunate that most bands/artists/producers don't have time/money to experiment...

I think the first time I heard a chain used musically was on track 3 of the first VAST album. Sounded really cool and matched the labored feel the song. Frankly, I wish there was more foley type stuff in music. The Downward Spiral is probably my favorite example of this. Car doors for snares, chains...

Vocals through guitar amp
Hey gang, I was wondering if any of you use guitar tube amps for vocals in a band practice setting. I've always used a PA for vocalists because that's what everybody does, but being a tone geek about my guitar sound maybe me wonder why we settle for such vanilla sound for vocalists. When I play guit...

This is a great idea. I will try this next mix.A.David.MacKinnon wrote:Set the reverb so you can just barely hear it, then turn it down a little more. Dry vs Wet production?
I've been reading that Rick Rubin book and he's unapologetically in favor of dry mixes. So went back and listened through most of his discography trying to ascertain what a 'dry' mix is. I think I mostly get it now--no room sound/ambience. It certainly gives the in-your-face kind of feeling, but to ...

And take the headphones off too! The key for me is a well placed Coles 4038 over the kit. Have the guitars and bass (and whatever) play, and adjust that OH till the meter is at it's lowest level, and lock it.. It's amazing how a good ribbon will reject well-placed amps in that null... Brilliant! No...

Re: Recording a band separately vs all together (same room)
--when recording all together, but the recording quality suffers--and mixing options become limited, if not a downright headache.. Why do you find that to be the case? What are the symptoms? I record live in a small garage- 9'x18', with a loud drummer, 2 guitars and bass. When I solo the guitar amp...
