It was like joining the circus for a week! Aside from the semi truck, which was the hood yanked from a scrapped dump truck, most of the vehicles were made from 2x4s and cardboard by a really talented local artist, a guy named Tim Kirkpatrick, whom I haven't seen or heard from since the show ended. A...

Firmly in the YMMV camp, I've used both Audiopile/EWI cables and Monoprice cables, and had good luck with both. My main reason for switching to Monoprice was that I'm eight bajillion miles from the Audiopile warehouse and shipping is often as much as the cables :D FWIW, the Monoprice cables I got ad...

It's alive!

Hey, all, For anyone who was interested in this project, it's finally out in the world. I was mostly done with my part by late summer of 2012, but there were lots of other details to work out. Long story short, a web store has been set up where you can download the video and/or the soundtrack album,...

About to head over now to peek inside. Expecting to find a lot of ICs and surface-mount stuff... will post some photos when we know more. Fingers crossed for some replaceable or cleanable mechanical parts.

Lowrey Festival PCM - dead keys. Schematics?

Hey, all, Going tomorrow to help a friend work on a thrift-store find: Lowrey Festival PCM organ. Best I can tell, dates from the early 90s. Googling and digging around in the lowreyforum.org website doesn't turn much up on it. Lots of service manuals available, but not for this particular model. Th...

From what I understand, the Aphex Aural Exciter extends crazy high frequencies all over those records. Anyone confirm?

Collin - awesome, awesome work! Posted without reading the rest of the thread, bad idea. Not knowing who recorded Tell Me or where is what I get for buying it on iTunes. I use both of those records to check out unfamiliar monitors. And now I need Gris Gris and Bluesiana Triangle.

I really, really dig this record. One thing that stands out to me is the upright bass sound. So meaty! It's so good that it really gets a lot of space in the mix when it happens, and it's consistent with the sound on the Jessica Lea Mayfield record Tell Me that was also done at Easy Eye. I live so c...

Hey, all, Thanks for your help! As soon as I can get ahold of a multimeter, I'll check out the potentials on the jacks. Good to know, too, about the potential for a miswired IEC; forgot to mention that we did replace that. Sure enough, the player picked up a HumX and it works just as well. Works out...

Hey, all, Thanks for the courteous replies and words of encouragement! Glad I had a second to revisit this conversation. Hoping for a few spare minutes soon to do some soundstage diagrams and investigate the arrangements of these tunes. I never had the original master of Ocean Rain, but the remaster...

hum problems - why did this solution work?

Hi, all, I got called in to eliminate some hum last week, and I'm not really sure how I did it. Be forewarned, the following is like a word problem from a studio maintenance midterm (I wish I'd taken that class, then I might be able to answer the questions!) The client (friend) has a brand new Korg ...

And I guess the bottom line is "what details or techniques can I learn from the production of these records so that I can make new records that sound this good?" I'm a detail-oriented dude, and I am getting carried away with all the minutiae... "oh look, Robyn Hitchcock plays Stratocasters! I think ...

I definitely feel the 20-year-rule has strong pull! I'm not sure I can see me and my peers looking back fondly on Limp Bizkit and Korn, who were the big deal my freshman year of high school. Almost all of the stuff I still like from my teens has some kind of throwback element to it. But like you sai...

Hm, one huge thing that happened in that time period was The Joshua Tree.
