This is all very helpful info. I doubt we'll be attempting any electrical work on the unit. I don't have the model number right now, but it's an old stereo Roberts, from the 60's I believe. It does have parts on the outside that are metal that you can touch (hence the ouch.) We did have it plugged i...

old ungrounded tape deck as preamp
Hi folks, A buddy of mine has a very old tape deck that he likes to use as a tube mic preamp. It has tubes in it somewhere doing something to whatever you plug into the 1/4" input. I've heard it and it does sound cool, words like "warmth," "character" etc. I've also touched it, and that was not near...

This is so weird. Traveling Wilburys first album came out when I was 6 years old and I was totally sold on it having a rootsy, authentic sound. Nowadays I'm aware that all of these sounds are the result of careful hypercontrolling production style. But I still feel like Traveling Wilburys is a far c...

Reviving this thread to add some new techniques I've learned in the past 3 years. For the particular album I was working on at the time I started the thread, my favorite technique ended up being thus: 1. Route the outputs of all the midrangey instruments (pretty much anything except bass, drums, and...

Everyone gets mad at me when I do this, but instead of using moongels or tape, I like to loosen one lug near me until the ring is gone, then crank up the opposite one until it gets loud and awesome. I'm sure it's bad for some reason, but it always sounds great. Something that helped me a lot was jus...

If I record my guitar at 44100, then switch the sample rate to 88200, wouldn't anything I record have the cutoff at 44khz? And then back to normal 22khz when I go back to 44100? I'm not converting, I'm just changing the project sample rate. Although if I want to slow down and record and speed it bac...

Re-amping at half speed or double speed? In this case for the purpose of capturing a room sound (as opposed to a new amp sound for a guitar), so I'd be putting whatever signal out of a clean, neutral sounding speaker, like a keyboard amp or a PA or something. I'm going to experiment with this in a w...

I know that feeling well. It still happens to me sometimes, less so than years ago. THis may sound weird, but I think things improved when I decided to only do the bare minimum necessary to get me where I'd be comfortable/confident with the finished product. I feel like it's easy to keep doing, like...

Re: 1st time recording FOR PAY, never dealt with business en
This is a statistical, true truth, right here: the likelihood of them getting famous and raking in the bucks is so vanishingly small that it isn't worth worrying about at all. Now is a good time to (continue to) do a great job and get a good rapport with the band. Credits on the CD don't have nearly...

I know you're trying to avoid headphones, but I just wanted to note that that Behringer headphone amp is terrible, and it's worth it to get any of the other cheapie ones because they can get way louder. I had the old Samson and it was great until the AC jack broke. Then I got that stupid Behringer a...

This won't result in getting that first take, but I often find that knowing you're recording puts a damper on the performance. Whenever possible I try not to talk to the band about things like "ok here we go take 1" etc, acting as if recording just sort of happens magically. Lots of great moments of...

What kind of part are you recording? Back in the day it was recommended to me that bass-heavy tracks be recorded on tracks 2 or 3, and if they are recorded on 1 and 4 they are likely to "fall off." Obviously that's not a technical term. I always heeded the advice without question or experimenting my...
