Workin On Tube Amps - Safety First!

So, I'm about to make my first attempt at modifying an old tube amp and I want remove the "Death Cap" and make some other modifications,,,, and I am totally freaked out. What are some of the safety steps I need to take inorder to ensure that this doesn't become my LAST tube amp modification?

So, what's the deal with the "grey plate" tubes anyway? Are they generally more desirable? Better build quality? Thx!

~ The Science Of Cabling And Connectors ~

I'm trying to gain some real, somewhat-factual, straight-forward knowledge about cabling, connectors, conductors and resistance, and I'd like to use this thread to separate some of the speculations, urban myths & hearsay by requesting some solid information about what we know based on something clos...

What great thread! Lately I've having a terrible time trying to decide what type cabling and connectors I plan to choose for my own project, and I'm considering something that incorporates silver in it's design to some degree. I mean, it IS the BEST CONDUCTOR ON THE PLANET EARTH and whatnot, so it j...

solder isn't intended to be the primary conductive element in an electrical joint. it's meant to mechanically join the conductors. ideally, the conductors are touching already, and the solder just holds them together.
That just changed my whole approach right there!

I use 4 types of solder here. I use Ersyn multiCore 60/40 tin/lead for power supply work when you need to glome it on. I use Ersyn SN 62 2% silver, great sound and wetting. I use Kester 48 3% silver for RoHS work. I also use WBT or Parts Express 4% silver/tin/lead for critical solder joints like mi...

Silver Solder

Is there any truth to the hype? Would a lead-based silver solder result in better connectivity and mechanical strength? Would the same be true for soldering power cables that would carry higher voltages of electricity? Thx!

Thanks a ton guys, any other suggestions out there? Man, I just read that Lynx Aurora 16 vs Behringer ADA8000 thread, ( http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/335267-lynx-aurora-16-vs-behringer-ada8000.html ), by no means are the information and opinions ab...

Please Help Me Choose An Interface btw $1k-2k

Thanx for peering in! I'm looking for a two track (in/out), with the highest quality A/D conversion I can get new or used under $2k. It must have timecode capability, (SMPTE or other to sync with an Ampex 104 reel-to-reel), and I don't need any internal pre's. The unit will most likely be used on an...

Such great info, thank you much, really. I know that time-aligning is not going to be pretty, but I fear that I may have no choice. I plan to purchase the 4 track, put the material on tracks 1 & 2, (reeeeally hoping that this won't affect the stereo image), and the TC on track 4. I'd start slamming ...
