Are 'vintage' type compressors relevant in today's music?

Everywhere I go, I hear "vintage" this and "warmth" that and "classic" that...Every plugin maker seems to be emulating the greats of yesteryear. But things are completely different now - tracking/mixing-wise. Is this really just a marketing ploy to sell units? I have much yet to learn about recordin...

When I first posted, I had no idea to the extent that FM radio was toying with the broadcast signal. If anyone is interested, there is an article from a few years back: http://www.omniaaudio.com/downloads/white-papers/what-happens-to-my-recording-when-it%27s-played-on-the-radio-frank-foti-robert-orb...

Thanks for your insights! I'm heading in the right direction from your tips already. I tried distorting with and without HPF and agree that you can get a lot of high end noise that's not necesary - at least in my limited experiments so far. The experiments continue... Bass Harmonics and Missing Fundamentals and Clarity AND ...

In my kitchen, I have an old FM Walkman hooked up to a pair of crappy computer speakers - probably first generation comp speakers... go ahead and laugh. Nobody sees them - they are tucked behind a jar in the corner. It's on sometimes when I'm in that area. I was listening this afternoon for a couple...

I think this thread was originally meant to just make everyone argue! Not at all... I'm not ignoring you guys... I'm listening and processing and trying to get a handle on this. I'll try to find your suggestions and check them out. I'm not ignoring you guys... I'm listening and processing and tryin...

Re: Tuning Snares

When recording a real drumset, the things that usually get changed or switched-out on a per song basis are the snare and cymbals. GJ So you are deciding this before you record it? I guess the key is to listen to the snare (sample) as it relates to the rest of the kit and the song as a whole, and th...

Tuning snares

Sometimes I link up to sites where people have uploaded their tunes and someone always seems to post: sounds good , although I'd pitch that snare sample higher (or lower) Are there guidelines for pitch snare samples? Are you trying to pitch to- what? a note in the song? EDIT : My title should probab...

Thank you for your insights! I was mainly looking to see how a "real" sounding kit would be recorded. So I see that the room mics are very important in that regard. Your responses range from 75% of the final drum mix to adding a bit for ambience. So it really is just a matter of taste. (Or you have ...

Recording Drums

I recently saw the documentary It Might Get Loud w Jimmy Page The Edge and Jack White. In one part, Page is showing the foyer of this old house Headley Grange where Zeppelin recorded a few tunes. Apparently, someone had left a new set of Bonham's drums right there at the entrance. Page explains how ...

What's the issue with Rewire in Reaper? Shouldn't be in the way if you don't need to use it. Also, you can uncheck the option to register Reaper as a Rewire slave in the installer, if that's the issue. I am interested in just a stand alone vst host that remains stand alone -- even when other progra...

Reaper has an indefinite free trial, give it a shot. http://reaper.fm By the by, you will not be able to get 'realtime' VST effects through a windows system. There will always be ASIO buffer latency, the amount depending on your hardware (both on the computer and the sound card side). You will noti...

I'm using Windows.

Quattro DSP looks interesting. Thanks for that, because I went off on a different tangent in searching and am now looking at Waves GTR 3 - which I think has a stand alone option. Maybe.

Back to the research...

Real time VST Host ? ?

This may be obvious to all -- but not to this new to computer recording person: I am looking for a VST Host (ideally free!), that can be used in real time as a stand alone application. I just downloaded the recent beta Audacity, but it is pretty buggy in my system and it does not allow real time pro...

Do you try harder?

Do you try harder to get it just right if you are recording a song that you REALLY like? I ask because an engineer, that is usually pretty calm, heard one of the tunes a band was rehearsing and, more or less, said this is a $%#% and $#%$#$% great song and just seemed to take more time and care (and ...
