FT: Sphere 500 series mic pre
It’s in great shape, but I could use a comp or eq more. Ideally looking for a Purple Audio PEQr-m, but try me! Will sell for $450 shipped, too.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I'm demoing 3 Josephson E22S at my place this week because somehow I have a shop in town that actually carries Josephson, and not only insists that I try one before I buy it, but instead that I enjoy the experience of having 3 setup, 2 on toms and one on snare. Hopefully I don't get hooked, cause i...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I grabbed a Purple Audio PEQr and whoa, that air band is really terrific on acoustic guitar. The 80hz boost is nice for bass DI, as well. I’d like to get a second - bet it’d be a nice BAX-type eq on a buss.

Re: "harsh frequencies"
A frequency analyzer can be helpful. I usually have one on my master bus and refer to it from time to time. I don't use it to make mix decisions but it can be really helpful to quickly locate problem areas. This has helped me in a big way with low mids, particularly in identifying the differences b...

That Nina Nastasia record - great drum sounds on there! She did a record with Jim White I really like, too.

Re: How to record the Flying Burrito Brothers
Damn, what songs on that album - so great. The hard-panning gets distracting to me, but that’s a quibble I can get past. Sneaky Pete’s steel playing is perfect on this record.

Re: Hearing Imbalance
One thing I’ve noticed after long drives is that my left ear gets desensitized to the wash of road noise up against the driver’s side window, and I’ll have some lopsided hearing for a bit after that. I wonder if some people also just naturally favor one ear over another, much like being left- or rig...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Dave Hill Europa preamp. I’m going to sell some stuff so I can get a second one. These things are so versatile. Did some acoustic guitar and bass DI yesterday with it - the option to slow down the slew rate and add harmonics allows for some nice mangling that doesn’t ever go over the top. And the 18...

Re: Reference mixtape
You'll have to let us know if anything else from these lists is useful, or if you've got some of your own contributions to add. It's been a quest for the last year or two to find references that A> Sound really good or are especially revealing B> The songs aren't too tedious to listen to Yeah, AC/D...

Re: Reference mixtape
Cool, and thanks, y’all. Some good suggestions. Just now setting up the new pair of Neumann kh120’s, and hearing all kinds of new detail in Gillian Welch’s The Harrow & the Harvest. Fun stuff, but I’m frightened to pull up my own mixes now...

What’s on your reference mixtape for when you’re working in another studio and/or listening on different monitors?
I’ve got some new monitors coming tomorrow and want to spend some time getting acclimated to them. Curious what y’all like to put on for an occasion like this.

Re: Recommend me a wild delay pedal
So many fun delay pedals out there.
For the hazy washed out thing, I’ve been really into the Demedash pedal I traded for. It’s got loads of character. No tap tempo, but I don’t miss it.

Re: how often are you using non cardioid patterns?
Omni for my Oktava mc012, super close to the 14th fret of an acoustic for finger-picked stuff. I’ve been experimenting with lots of acoustic mic’ing lately, but this old standby just works in finding a nice balance.
