Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?
Microtech Gefell UM70 (multi-pattern M7) or M71 (cardioid-only M7) on either the 691 or 692 preamp body. I own both capsules and both preamp bodies. They are incredible mics for a wide range of instruments, but I feel like they really are wonderful as vocal mics. Definitely. I’ve got a M71 with a 6...

FT: AEA R88 MK1; looking for LDC
I really love the AEA, but most of what I’m doing from home is close-mic’ed. Interested in swapping it for a LDC - a Gefell UMT71 would be cool, but I’m open to offers.
I can add two Triton Fethead Germaniums in to help balance a trade out.

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise
I’ve found that a touch of that hiss can help mask some mic self-noise that might show up only when the tracks using that mic are playing. Helps level out what might otherwise be an obvious appearance of noise, however low in the mix it might be.

Ughh. I’ve been there. Upstate NY in February and the furnace went kaput. That’s vintage mic kind of money right there.A.David.MacKinnon wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 7:24 pmDoes a furnace count? If so....... A new furnace!!!!
Came home to a cold house. Apparently vintage is not a word that carries good connotations when you're talking HVAC.

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better
Early 2000's, and self-recorded my band's first ep. Got the new-fangled Ozone plugin to try, and loved the limiter and maximizer on the mix buss, so I went on to limit and maximize every track. Then every buss. And then the mix buss. I won the loudness wars with that one. It wasn't even close to goo...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Does a plugin count as new gear? Got the Chandler Germanium compressor from Softube yesterday, after demoing it for a couple of weeks. It's pretty easy to dial in something smashed, but there are a lot of less-obvious tones that sound great once you get the hang of the feedback controls and the mix ...

My brothers. I did away with one of the tone knobs and just moved the volume knob: https://i.imgur.com/YVw3mhr.jpg I just wanna strum some chords without getting bloody knuckles. Anodized pickguards on bursts are a thing to behold. My P-bass build has the same thing. Almost my favorite Fender combo...

Re: What are you listening to today?
Went for a run and put on the remastered version of What’s the Story, Morning Glory, which I haven’t spent much time with. If ever there was a record in need of remastering, it was that one.

Re: I need help High Passing
I’ve been using a healthy amount of the UAD Tonelux Tilt eq lately, mostly for the 6 dB high-pass filter. You can sneak it up a bit higher than you might a 12 or 24 dB filter and have it still sound natural. I have a little Martin 0-15 that puts out a fair amount of upper low-end (does that make sen...

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
I'd like to get some driven guitars without blowing the shit apart. So, tell me what's cool and affordable. Whatever you do, you'll need to mic it with a 57. Since you've got some great amps at your disposal already, I'd go with an Xotic EP booster. It adds a touch of sparkle and compression and dr...

Re: Best Mics for Recording Acoustic Guitar?
I’ve used an Oktava mc012 a lot on acoustic guitar, and like both the omni and cardioid caps depending on what I’m going for. The low-mids can be a little foggy, but sometimes that’s not a bad thing.
Beyer m201 is also a great acoustic guitar mic.

Re: Best Mics for Recording Acoustic Guitar?
Solo is only important if its a solo recording. You can A/B two mics and mic A might sound superior in every way, but once you listen in the context of the track, mix B very could be the better choice. So true. This is why the 4033 can be a cool acoustic guitar mic. In a busier mix, it tends to put...

Re: References in mixing
But what a rhythm section. Man, yes. I saw Sebastian Steinberg a year ago with Calexico and Iron and Wine, and he played a heavy bass solo on his upright. Speaking of references, I like Calexico’s Algiers album. I’ve listened to it a zillion times, so I know it pretty well, and it’s a nice mix of r...
