Ya, there's phase issues with all the mics on. I set them all up to compare different combinations and just because I can :D not necessarily to use all of them at once. Using some digital magic can help with the phase stuff to a point though too. The Altec 201B is great IMO. I've used the 81, 451, K...

Settin' up some drum mics (a few pics)

Just thought I'd throw this out there. My band is in the preproduction phase of doing another record and we've started dickin' around with getting some drum sounds. We did our last two releases in this same shoebox of a room. I'm gonna improve the room treatment before we get serious about tracking;...

DIY XLR to TRS snake

Here's a little drop snake I wired up to go from XLR coming from the tracking room to TRS for the patchbay in the control room. The XLR connectors were salvaged from an old Tascam mixer and I had a Bud project box laying around. The TRS ends (not pictured) were also reused from some other shit. The ...

They come down and say "but where's the tape machine?" and it gets awkward real quick.
Awesome

Actually, if somebody put duct tape on any of my mics or cables, I might lose my shit. That residue is so gross. That's why I like the piece of guitar pick/zip tie/paper clip put through the slot - it stays in place, prevents the button from being pressed, and leaves no residue. I love duct tape bu...

Funny shit in this thread. Breaking stuff sucks but I find it even more annoying when I (or somebody) just put a dent or scratch in an otherwise fine piece of gear. Like the one scratch in my sunburst Strat from a trombone player bumping into me. The rest of the guitar's finish is flawless. Maybe I ...

I have two M201s and I use them a lot. They are workhorses and, yes, they sound better than a 57. To be honest though, they are not my favorite mic for top of snare. In a live setting, you'll probably like the smoother, meatier sound, but for recording I sometimes find them too dark or just lacking ...

Thanks for listening. I see where you're coming from with the lyrical theme. The guitar sound was mostly an old Les Paul through a germanium Fuzz Face to a Peavey JSX and a Marshall cab. Mics were a Fathead up close and an Altec 201 condenser in the room. No fancy preamps or anything. Used a Gretsch...

Egypt - Blood Temple Hymn

New Egypt track for a split 12" with Wo Fat. I played guitar on it, recorded it and mixed it. I also built the Univibe pedal used on the guitar solo at the end of the song. Mastered at Crystal Clear Sound in Dallas.

Just adding an update to this old thread. This pedal can be heard on the guitar solo at the end of this song:

It's a pretty long song so if you want to jump to the Univibe part it starts at 7:30.

I'd like to try out one of those MXR Dual Limiters but I haven't seen any that were exactly "dirt cheap." Depends on what you consider cheap.

I really like my ART MPA and VLA. Cheap as hell used.

From the AKG site: ?The relaunched D12 VR will give tracked drums a vintage, yet crisp and modern sound, sure to make percussion tracks shine for professionals or casual artists around the world.?

Vintage, yet modern. What does that even mean? I do want to hear it though.
