Metal/rock mix, critiques wanted

Going for an old-school type production here, so single takes, no drum samples, minimal editing etc etc. I still want the mixes to be of a commercial standard. I'd be particularly interested to hear from any MEs out there as to how these mixes would translate post-mastering. Particular things im wor...

Metal Mix

Here's a track from my band's first EP, kind of proggy metal.

Any observations, pointers, tips, etc would be much appreciated.

My first "official" single release on iTunes and Spotify. Here is a link to the music video. Let me know what you think!

Fostex R8 and Yamaha DMP7 opinions?

I'm looking for an 8 track reel to reel for home demos, and general tapey goodness. Just seen an ad for a Fostex R8, sold with a Yamaha DMP7 digital mixer, can anybody vouch an opinion on either of these pieces of gear? I'm especially interested in the DMP7, I've never heard of it before, but it loo...

Every engineer should own...

A turntable and some classic albums. My father bought me a nice turntable at christmas, and gave me all his albums, as he doesnt have one anymore. Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, loads of other great stuff. Listening to vinyl - the recording as it was meant to be heard - has completely ...

Well, the board has eleven categories already. If we want to add categories for mixing, or miking, or effects, or compression, or tracking vs. overdubbing...you could subdivide this into infinity. But there is, quite simply, no point to doing that. I think you're being unfair. I would like to see m...

Live recording to portastudio - mic selection

So, I'm recording myself and my friend performing a song in a couple of months, infront of a live audience. Its a song we wrote specifically for the occasion, and we want to capture that performance in a natural way - no artificial reverbs or overdubs. The performance will be in a 400 capacity schoo...

Thats really great! I wish there was more of this stuff around. I've even toyed with the idea of something similar myself, never quite got round to it though haha The BBC do some great programmes with folk musicians here in Scotland, called The Transatlantic Sessions, worth a look on youtube. Keep i...

Any time I've had problems like that it's been from too small a buffer. That's the first thing I'd try.

Hope you get it sorted!

Breaks/lunch

Does anybody charge for these? For example 9 hours tracking with an hour for lunch = a bill for ten hours I dont do long days much, but when I do I tend to just nip off for ten minutes to make lunch and eat at the console. If the band decide to take an hours break, do they get charged for it? I'd ch...

Its difficult to give you any thoughts without some more information. Is it a traditional piano recital, or a honky tonk?

What else is on the song? Vocals, strings, a whole band?

Cheers
