Thank you guys for all your input. The work that I am starting to do is more foley, dialog, sound effects, editing, etc. rather than music. I do know most commercial releases are done on PT, but going the PT route feels like I'll be selling my soul to Satan. :D Well, it's probably not worth much bu...

You can hear every little detail on these electrostatic headphones
Their marketing copy says "planar magnetic" but are these actually electrostatic headphones? Easiest way to tell is if they come with a separate voltage amplifier?

Fostex T-20RP / T-50RP are the only cans I trust. They just sound right to me. Though I can't honestly recommend them to other people. I've also got the original Stax in-ears for a second opinion, and Beyerdynamics for casual listening.

Cheap shotguns sound terrible if there are any reflections coming from off-axis. I honestly can't see a cheap shotgun picking up anything useful for you in a studio. At the very least, don't buy one unless you're guaranteed you can return it.

I use a 27" iMac. It's for me at the lower limit where I don't need a second screen. Rubbish connectivity in the new models but I don't have much outboard.

Very interesting. Yes, I was wrong. That Ariel Jansen article indeed very clearly says that HF frequencies need to be cut at recording stage to avoid oversaturating the tape.

Well, I think there is a misunderstanding. In the section 6.2 there is this sentence: The standards give clearly defined and relatively easy producible curves for the frequency response of the flux on a recorded tape, the so-called standard flux curve . Such flux curves can only be produced or measu...

"And stick with 48kHz, 24 bit, 29.97 drop frame" i am strictly audio at this point. not sure what he is going to give me as far a first draft or anything. i have always recorded 44100 24 bit. should i do this different if im just doing audio files? Yeah, pretty much all video work is 48kHz. I'd rec...

Yeah, sounds good. And think of it this way: the video files they send you are tiny compared to what the editor or colourist work with. :D

I do mixing for indie films so I've worked with a few composers. Usually what I have to ask for separately is stems so I can do a surround mix. Maybe ask ahead if they are expecting to do a surround mix or not. Is there a sound designer working on the film or is it just the director? Either way, you...

Thanks for the replies... well... aside from the name-calling... Oh, I'm sorry man. I wasn't actually calling you stupid. It was a rhetorical device trying to illustrate the psychological mechanism why you think that SM57 is inferior. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias#Persistence_of_di...

Because:
-If your recordings sound better with an SM57, then why have you wasted all that money on those expensive mics and preamps? What's wrong with you? Are you stupid?

That's why.

Hackintoshes can be pretty good these days from what I've heard. Back in the day we had the IBM PC compatibles (i.e. clones). I wish someone would start to manufacture Apple Mac compatible computers - I suppose no chance of that happening in the litigation environment of 2015. :/
