Sign me up dude. I would love to hear some. Of course I would never have any to post *cough*cough*

Maybe I could rub some ponytail sound on some records.

We had two recapped in 2004. A world of difference. They still make the 610, that was news to me.

Awesome compressors.

These are the kind of things you bring up in pre-production. Hire the person you trust. If you trust them, let them do whatever they do. If you do not trust them, go to someone else. I will try anything. Some of the coolest things I have learned have been from an accident or someone asking to try so...

Re: A no-no: Playing other sessions for clients.

I'm learning how quickly this ruins the vibe of a session. So, just a note to anyone who might not have picked up on the damage this can do - NEVER play your other recording sessions for the client, even if you think they'd be interested. Wait for a meeting that doesn't include working on their rec...

Have an opinion. Do not be afraid to express it. Challenge everything. Or, go with the masses and end up with protools doing demos for local bands to a click track like everyone else in your class will. bravo to you. State your opinion to your teacher. Tell him to talk about The Beatles AND The Melv...

Re: There are no more bad local recordings...

'demo' or 'album' that sounds almost as good as something a revered, seasoned and established engineer and label would have put out 10 to 15 years ago. I mean some of it sounds incredible. I love the recordings of seasoned pros from around 1990. Soundgarden, Pearljam, Alice in Chains. I hear many m...

Do a song yourself. Hire the guy/girl you spoke about to do the same song. Compare. That's the easy way for someone to hear the differences in mixing at home vs. professional. If you do it yourself, awsome. Take your time. Good luck. I rarely even mix with the client present. It ends up being 4 guys...

God I know exactly what you mean. Try these... "Why am I taking this more serious than you?" "Did my friends stand behind you and talk and distract you when you were doing your parts?" The thing is, of course they are excited, so I do not want to be the dick that killed the vibe. So I usually tell p...

My pre-production can last from a few hours to a few weeks. It all depends on what the band wants. Many times, I storyboard all the songs, look for patterns that emerge and break bad songwriting habits. Set all the tempos and set tempo maps for changes from verse/chorus/etc. Usually I find that many...

Sometimes (NOT ALWAYS) it keeps things fresh and alive to work in 5 hour blocks. Charge more for weekends. No a bunch, maybe a few bucks. Bands want weekends for convenience Convience costs money. Pepsi costs more at the 7-11 than the grocery store. A plumber costs more to fix a leak Sunday afternoo...

Nice change to what I get, interns who want to sit around and read magazines and smoke with the band. I always tell them to go wring the bass out of the bass traps. If someone is trying to help, just let them know that you are responsible for the equipment and you are a bit worried. Give them some b...

Drum/bass sound on "In Bloom"

That Nirvana song sounds different from the others on the record. I know overall the band did not like the production of the record, but "In Bloom" I just love the sound of the drums and bass. So dark, so primitive, so dry, yet still of a great fidelity and up -front. Any info on that setup? Anythin...
