When i first heard the new completed version, after years of listening to the bootlegs, i thought it wasn't as bad as I expected. I think they did a pretty good job really. Still, i'd love to see the old smile sessions being released as a box set some day.

To me his best album is "Latin-esque" where he used two orchestras in two different recording rooms playing live. You've got one orchestra on the left of the cans, the other on the right, if my memory serves me right. The stereo effects on his early albums are caricatural. Beyond all these recording...

When is OPTO compression not suitable?

(thanks for tomb 4)

I bought a Distressor recently and so far I've used the opto mode a lot as I find it very discrete and faster to set, but since I'm no expert on the subtleties of compression, I wonder on what sources that type of compression isn't really suitable? Your experience?

Neve Portico 5042 (tape head emulation)...

Has anyone tried it?

Does anyone have one and could maybe post samples?

Re: brian wilson singing

I'm pretty sure B Wilson uses autotune these days. Live there wasn't a single flat note. I can't imagine someone as damaged as him being able to do that without something.

60's Trident preamps

I realize that amongst all the White album's tracks the ones that were recorded at Trident studios (like Honey Pie for instance) sound great and better than the other ones. Does anyone know what kind of pres they used at Trident in 68? It sounds pretty valvish to me but there was so much valve invol...

Re: Preamps, different types of the same..

A good and famous example of an old fashioned sounding album is Kind of blue by Miles Davis. Recorded with eight M49s probably through the same sound chain. There's a simplicity and uniformity to it that i tend to prefer, although i can understand a preference for more complex sounding recordings.

Re: Preamps, different types of the same..

What i've noticed is that modern CDs sound more and more like several records that were juxtaposed onto the same CD track. (i exclude CDs using samples from other records). The colors and textures are so different from each other. The older recordings are, the more they sound like they were coming f...

Do you mean low gain on a given amp or low volume in general?

Re: Does gear like Distressor or Fatso=Analog tape?

The thing with the Fatso, and one of the reasons some people made negative comments about it initially, is that you can't switch it on and leave it like you would with a tape recorder. All parameters like tranny, compression, warmth, harmonics generator, interact in a very subtle way with how you se...

Re: Does gear like Distressor or Fatso=Analog tape?

I've got both products. None of them really sounds like tape - but what tape anyway? But both are great stuff to make digital sound more enjoyable. I can't imagine recording without a Fatso now. My next move to get a better sound without tape is to use slower and smoother preamps like like either va...

Re: Brad Mehldau "Largo"

My favourite tracks are the first one and that tasteful cover of Dear Prudence.

The sound textures on this album are so enjoyable to listen. Drums sound so smooth, so lush. I don't know how they did that.
