Any new thoughts on mixing low end for ear buds?
I used the search function some on this one ( e.g., the original crapppy little earbuds thread , but was looking for more insight . . . How do you deal with a mix that translates well across everything EXCEPT th typical $20 skull logo earbuds -- which is what my friends are most likely to hear my st...

Re keep vs. sell, it helps to know what your ultimate goal is. If a piece of gear is relevant to what I'm trying to do over the next few years, I keep it even if it's a spare. If something is good but doesn't get me somewhere, I usually sell the piece. I've let go of nice stuff that I was the wrong ...

Problem: Why is my speaker singing?
Wanted to get the board's take on a speaker problem, since I'm getting no response from tech support. -------- The patient: Old-style Event 20-20 BAS powered monitor -------- Precipitating event: After years of not using this speaker, I hooked it up to a +4 connection from Audiofire Pre8 interface> ...

How does the 441 compare to a 421? As strange as it sounds, I have never been able to make love to an MD421. To me, it's just not a musical sound. There is something about the upper mids and top-end that just feels too aggressive in frequencies that are not attractive, maybe around maybe 8-9k and a...

On the playing side of things: Korg Z1 physical modeling synth. Overpaid a little to get a clean one with the extra card, but so far it's been totally worth it. Always nice when a new instrument triggers new songs and brings old ones back to life . . . Slightly OT, completed the switch from Sonar/Ab...

And that is why it is always a good thing to have a written agreement. And if someone balks at a written agreement, then it is probably best to not work with that person. How would that work on an unpaid job, though? You'd present documents to your friends to sign? I'd probably try to talk through ...

One more spin on the original question: I've had a similar problem in the past (re graphics design, not music), even though I was GETTING PAID by the friend I was doing the work for. The job went on and on, with endless drafts, and endless requests for more changes. Any project, whether it's a favor...

I like what everyone else has said. But I don't see much gray area on this issue. A scab is a scab. Competent string and horn players SHOULDN'T PLAY FOR FREE FOR AN EMPLOYER WHO'S GETTING PAID. Once some of them "donate" their services on what used to be a typical bread-and-butter gig, it weakens th...

I used Cakewalk's DAWs from the last Pro Audio version, up through Sonar 8.5. Also used to do a lot of everyday sketching with the budget Sonar app, which I forget the name of now. Consistently, Cakewalk/Sonar stuff was the most unstable of any DAW I own -- far worse than the different incarnations ...

There's a John Fischbach article way back in Tape Op 21. He was one of the main engineers on SONGS. It's not actually a very big article, but he does talk about the album some. Maybe someone else will know if it's in the second TAPE OP book? --- A pretty great resource re SONGS, and a fun watch, is ...

What I got out of it, though, was that he's got one sequence that he wants to step through manually, not a set of sequences that he wants to switch between on the fly. Like, a sequence of notes where it plays the first note the first time he hits the pedal, then hit the pedal again and it plays the...

If the OP wants to go note by note with each foot press, like Ashcat said, then a Drumkat 3.5 with a footswitch or pedal would do it, at least up to like 8 notes before starting over. I will sell mine at a reasonable price if that would be helpful. And yeah, I'm a little unclear which goal we're try...

Another way to do this would be to use a laptop running Ableton Live in session view, with the laptop attached through some kind of basic MIDI interface to one of those MIDI pedalboards that sends out a different MIDI note for whatever pedal you press. You could set up an Ableton session with a diff...

About using the white Ambassadors on snare and toms -- Don't be afraid to do ugly things to them -- e.g, duct tape near the edge of the head anywhere that helps, or taping a wallet on the snare while you play, or tuning the drums higher or lower than sounds right in the room. Do whatever the mic lik...

Cheap mini-key instruments rule at my house. In fact the first keyboard I owned was one of the original analog Yamaha Portasounds that came in this little formfitting suitcase. The later Portas that have the five-slider FM synth ( as in some of the pics above) can sound cool. One of the fancier ones...
