we have power over the technical (ie:non-mystical) aspects of making records, so we tend to completely focus on those. ;-)
aside from acquired skill & learning, so much of this craft is 100% undefinable that it's important to keep that "through the looking glass" view of it all.

it occurred to me that this would apply most in mixing full albums. To me a perfect example (aren't they always?) would be the beatles. There are beatles albums - to me btw, this is purely opinion - that seem like a "collection of singles" (rubber soul being a prime example), just a "let's get some ...

i think there's a lot of scientific applications most folks overlook when making records. The brain hangs between the ears - the ultimate patch bay - and can make some pretty wild connections.

Effect Sends & our spatial brains:

hey dudes, I've been going down an awesome bunny trail w/ how our brains relate to surroundings & the shift of them. It occurred to me to share this here: http://amorephonics.tumblr.com/ "If crossing a threshold of a doorway into a new room of a house sets our brains up to be less likely to remember...

being charged BACK TAXES on previous years of studio time is what freaked me out about this post in MN. Could you stay in biz if this happened to your studio? Or if you don't have your studio registered as a biz w/ proper tax ID number, could they come after your personal assets? The potential evil ...

Audited! Paying back sales taxes on charged studio time.

Hey y'all, Didn't know where to post this, as there doesn't seem to be an apocalypse forum here, but - if you live a state that charges sales tax you may wanna read this and pass it along. http://www.thedailyswarm.com/headlines/minnesota-goes-ham-recording-studio-sales-tax/ This sets up all kinds of...

bowie snyth sound?

anyone know what keyboard was used on bowies 'lets dance'?
it seems to be the same used on chess 'one night in bangkok', but the interweb synth dweebs are strongly divided.
FM? Juno?
any thoughts?

Don't know how many Portland bands recently had their records mixed by Tchad, but I'm betting the OP is referring to Blitzen Trapper's new album , out in a few weeks. Didn't get to hear the unmastered mixes but the final product sounds dope. Brian's lovely drumming survives the process totally inta...

all 80's recording bashing aside, his mixes are really similar to Jason Corsaro's, just with modern hip tones. I'm a big fan of Corsaro's, so I think it's cool folks are digging in his fields. This shit is like the power station w/ more distorted signals & less gated verbs. w-i-d-e-a-s-h-e-L-L p.s. ...

I was really asking VivaK, or have you heard these mixes, too? As a huge Tchad Blake fan, I'm really curious about this. Chris Garges Charlotte, NC not compressy transients - just loud as shit. Nothing sounds overtly compressed 'to tape'. The attack & drum levels are just in yo face! On top of ever...

the mix itself sits like a live board mix, with heavy use of rooms and ambient verbs in lieu of identifiable plates, springs, etc.. The transients from the kick, snare & toms sit on top of everything. Really cool.

i just heard an unmastered tchad blake mix!

...and what struck me about it what how effing loud the drum transients were in relation to everything.
really cool.
