Re: How many guitar amps?
I have 3. All are 2x10” combos. AC10, Vibrolux Reverb and Brownface Super. It’s too many or not enough, depending on the day. I mean, I could do all I need with any 1 of those fine amps, but I just friggin’ love gear in general and guitar amps in particular.

Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.
Can you talk a little more about your setup? Are you tracking to tape? I thought low fi went out the door when people started recording music with computers? I associate low-fi with a lot of stuff that came out in the early 90’s with bands putting out records that were recorded on boom boxes that so...

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare
Nice to see AVH getting some love. His fills are so fluid. He’s always in there serving the song.
I’ll 2nd overdubbing cymbals. Not every drummer can do it but it allows you to flex in some unique ways. If I’m the drummer that’s the way I’ll do it every time.

Nice. I love the cx-3. Ive always wanted one. And I first heard them via an old band-mate as well. Let us know who wins!

Re: Downsizing advice
Another thing I would add, especially when it comes to pieces like your mixer... I always tend to over emphasize the role gear plays in the way things sound, so that tends to make me want to hang on to things longer than I should. It’s good to remember that your recordings will still kind good when ...

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....
I finally sold my Roland Space Echo. I loved it to death but it didn’t pull its’ weight so it went out the door. In the end it was too much of a one-trick pony for me. The prices they get these days made it easier to let it go.

Depth of Field and Recording Levels
Hi gang. I’m tracking at home on to tape and I’m interested in people’s thoughts on tracking levels for instruments that are going to be in the back of the mix. Conventional wisdom is to keep my noise floor as low as possible by keeping my levels up. But I’m thinking that tracking something at a low...

Re: Favorite Hardware Reverb Unit
I had an m3000 which was so flexible and easy to use. It also had lots of other useful tools other than reverb. Mine crapped out shortly after I got it though. I was pretty disgusted. I liked it so much I almost bought another to replace it but couldn't bring myself to throw more money at something ...

Re: Click tracks. Love them/Hate them.
Lots of great information here. Thank you to everyone who chimed in. I've just been trying to find my way into a song recently have been having trouble with the click. I think in this particular case I need to try starting with a scratch rhythm guitar/guide vocal tracked while listening to a kick in...

Click tracks. Love them/Hate them.
As someone who records on their own most of the time I have to rely on clicks, or at least I think I do. They are far from perfect. In fact, they drive me crazy. They don't allow a song to breathe. They make it hard to get behind the beat, which is where the groove lives a lot of the time. I tend to...

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?
I don't think you're missing anything, but my perspective is a bit myopic. I record myself pretty much exclusively, so I'm not genre-hopping all that much. I don't have any clients that I need to consider when approaching my gear. I know, through trial and error mostly, what mics sound good on what ...

EQ when mixing
I know one of the keys to making recordings that sound like you want them to sound is to get it right at the source. Get the instruments to sound like you want them to sound and mic them deliberately. But how many times do you folks find that, when at the mixing stage, there's always something that ...

Re: eBay seller sent me the wrong mic....
I've tried to bond with the 441 but never could. I think they're pretty overrated myself. They need a shitload of gain. I track to tape. I've always been able to find a better option. A fantastic live mic though.
YMMV
