Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

Love my Jensen Twin Servo on anything (and really any of my pre's built by John Hardy). Millennia are my faithful old standby for anything that needs to be sqeaky clean and precise; but there's something about the big fat transformers in my Hardy's... I see you do a lot of remote recording. Do you ...

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

For recording, my first choice is a Milab dc-196; barring that, a ribbon: m130 or R121; also have gotten good results with the C414B-ULS. For live stuff, a KMS105 is usually first choice, but RE20 is good, too. Be a bit out in front of and above the bell, aiming across it at the keys. Don't let them...

Re: Insuring your studio and live gear

Another vote for Capital Bauer/Donna Mehan. I have General Liability and an equipment floater with them. This thread has inspired me to create a detailed inventory. I've discovered I need more coverage... Fortunately, I've not had the need to test my insurance; but in my particular specialty, a Gene...

Re: non-paying clients?

how do you deal with non-paying clients? I've had some in the past that were always late and I had to remind them (pressure them) and it got to where if they wanted studio time, I made them pay ahead in cash. But I feel weird doing that because it makes the whole thing a little awkward. I'm asking ...

Re: Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring

I nominate this for Zombie Thread of the Month, classical division (of course).  Whenever I miss the "old days", I seem to come back here. This place seems like a ghost town nowadays - barely a post per day, if that... Under another user name, I think I've been a member here since 20...

Re: Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring

I mean, the cello sounds nice but the link takes me to a recording that is in mono. Generally, for classical music, stereo recording is de rigeur - even on solo instruments. NYC audiences are definitely tough, but in classical, the room and the environment is part of the performance. I've dealt with...

Re: tips for mixing a live recording - using gates etc

I'd echo the advice given about trying to make the bleed work in the mix and/or mixing it as you would if it were actually live. Generally, if you're messing with the lead vocal, then the drum spill is going to be coming and going, which will definitely draw attention to itself. Bleed is part of the...

Re: anyone working at 96k?

There is an OPTIMAL sample rate; fast enough to accommodate everything we hear (the audible range). But exceeding this optimal sample rate will only reduce audio accuracy. I think what Dan is saying is to pick the sample rate that is just enough to capture the frequency range that you want to hear ...

Re: anyone working at 96k?

If it's solely for video, then I do 48k; but anything where the audio-only version is going to be important, it's 96k, so long as I can keep the track count at or below 32. For higher track counts than 32, my rig is still limited to 44k/48k So have you had projects where the 96k and the 44k/48k are...

Re: anyone working at 96k?

In spectral views I see lots of action up there above 20 kHz, so in the name of overkill I just do it this way. I had been doing sessions at lower sample rates and always took note of the straight line "haircut" at the Nyquist limit in spectrographs - not unlike looking at a waveform that was brick...

Re: anyone working at 96k?

I really haven’t ventured above 48K, because I’m most often starting sessions with drums and using more than 8 inputs simultaneously. Unless I’m misunderstanding, I think my Apogee AD-16 (what year IS this?) can only convert 8 channels when using optical at 96k, vs 16 channels at 48k. Your AD16 can...

Re: Classical Tape-Op

As others have already said, Remote Possibilities over on Gearspace is a good place. The Classical Music Location Recording Group on facebook is also pretty good, IMHO: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2165880873644305/ I'd recommend that it's good idea to do some homework on your topic before asking...
