Trying to Get the Group Started

Where are you located, and where would you like to meet?

I live in Bethesda, and we could meet at my place initially; we also have a small community clubhouse if we outgrown my small living room. We could also decide to round-robin host the meetings.

Would once a month be too much?

DC TapeOp Group

Any amateurs and projects studio people interested in meeting once a month to talk shop, build equipment, and invite manufacturers' reps to speak/demo gear? Maybe even do our own version of "charitable recording?"

Turntable

Any turntable with a changer mechanism will be powered by a capstan wheel, not a belt. Based upon my memory rolling against the inside lip of the rim of the platter. The first thing I would do is to vacumm all dust and dirt from the mechanism. Then, dab a little solvent on the axle of the capstan wh...

Power cord metalworking

Ah, thanks again Brad. What sort of tool did you use for the Power cord receptacle? An alternative suggestion: 1. Instead of IEC power cord receptacle, use a Neutrik "Powercon" chassis receptacle and matching cord plug. There are two types , one for incoming AC power (the one you want), and another...

Mic versus other pres

I imagine there is a difference between building a pre for stereo and one for a mic? Yes there is. for one thing, there are different kinds of pres in the audio world- pres that work at phono level, pres (called pre-pres) for mvoing coil cartridges, and line level pres. Mike pres are more like phon...

hard to say if you would get value

Most of the articles are related to home stereo playback - construction of amps, preamps, mods of products, etc, Here and there will be articles of direct relevance to the DIY studio constructor. To give you an idea what is in the current issue, there is an article on building a line array speaker (...

AudioXpress

I have been a subscriber since the early 1980s (when it was called The Audio Amateur), and I have copies from the mid 1970s. I have kept all my back issues, and it the greatest! They also published a magazine on tubes, called "Glass Audio," and on speakers, called "Speaker Builder." The market could...

My experience

Resistors can make a significant improvement on sonics if the rest of the circuit is up to snuff. If you are already using top notch opamps (not the 4558 stuff these were made with) resistors can add that extra bit of detail. Since all audio runs through them they do affect the sound. Once you have...

Fully balanced tube mic pre schematic

Over the course of the years, I have collected many schematics for tube mic pres, e.g., Cilletti "Electric Crayon," "Paul Stamler (in Audio Amateur ), Tape Op , Ampex 300/350, Pultec MB-1. all use unbalanced topology after the input transformer and before the output transformer. However, I have neve...

Stereo tube pre-amp

I have an Audio Research SP-3 tube preamp which includes phono inputs. It is NOT a collector's item, since the cosmetic condition is only fair. However, when I boxed it 15 years ago, it was working well. I replaced the original volume control with an Alps audiophile pot (another reasaon why this is ...

FREE: Turntable

I have a belt-drive Sony turntable, that has no arm (you were supposed to add your own arm), FREE for pick-up in DC area - Bethesda Maryland. Sony made a few audiophile equipment models over the years, and this was one of them. Considered better than the Thorens turntables of the early to mid 1970s....

There is another mod by Paul Stamler that makes more sense than taking out the transformer (nutty mod). That would be adding a loading resistor in parallel across the output, in order to change the overall impedence seen by the mike pre input. I believe it was in Electronic Musician.

I have ordered twice, over three year span. Highly recommend him. He even shipped my order een though my check was slightly under the amount (I underestimated shipping),

He has stuff that no other vendor has, or has stuf at quite reasonable prices compared to other vendors.
