Re: vinyl collecting ( and surrounding planetary atmosphere )

Good coffee, fresh bread, homemade past and vinyl...may the simple pleasure continue to grace all of us in 2024. Glad to see another of your 'photo spreads' and thanks for checking in.

Re: vinyl collecting ( and surrounding planetary atmosphere )

I'm not here on TOMB daily, sometimes not even weekly, and I can be pretty dozy and unobservant but, while reading everyone's music picks for 2023, I suddenly realized that @shedshrine was MIA, apparently has been since mid 2022. Did I miss something (hopefully nothing tragic!) or did he just move on?

Re: rotating speaker alternative

Those old Califones were beasts! I used to run a high school AV department back in the '70s and we had a bunch of those Califones as well as Wollensac cassette machines...not particularly hi-fi stuff but capable of surviving a thermonuclear explosion! As I recall the old Leslies, which every roadie ...

Re: I bought a CD!

On average I buy 5-10 CDs (some used) and a couple of vinyls per year. I don't stream music, although I will occasionally listen to a tune I want to hear on YouTube or follow a link to Bandcamp. etc. Last night my wife and I were doing some digital versus vinyl shootouts of Wings albums in honour of...

Re: Could Forums Like This Make a Comeback?

Forums definitely appeal to an older demographic (I am a 'senior' myself). One advantage of smaller forums, like this one, is that you can choose to be much more dialed-in to your specific interests. And, as noted, they each have their own personalities. I agree that a lot of GS is adversarial and "...

Re: SDCs for Choir & Orchestra & Audience recordings (sennheiser 80xx)

The Senny mics are great. They are impervious to humidity (in case you want to record in the rain forest) and they sound great. I have used lots of the older MKH series - MKH 20, 30, 40 - but not the 80xx series. My understanding is that they are very close cousins. However, they are relatively pric...

Re: Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring

This is a sleepy little corner of the interweb but I enjoy the different perspectives of the regulars here (compared to some of the other 'big' audio forums). Not being a musician myself, I don't often have much to add to a lot of the threads but I'm glad the core of regular contributors keep things...

Re: digital playback device for live shows?

I'm not a performer so take this with a grain of salt... most digital multitrack recorders -Tascam DR series, SD7xx or MixPre, etc. - work fine as playback devices. Its just a matter of finding one that has a menu / button structure that suits your needs . My Tascam DR-70D is pretty much a sandwich ...

Re: What amp are folks putting behind NS-10Ms?

I have used ART SLA1 amps to power all kinds of things - sort of a studio swiss army knife. Cheap, cheerful and surprisingly good for the price.

Re: anyone working at 96k?

There is definitely information up 'there' in the 20 KHz to 40 Khz zone (says he who can't measurably hear above 12 KHz...). I can hear a difference between the 24/96 file played from my DAW and the 16/24 render played back on the same system. Is it significantly better? Not really, but the differen...

Re: Recording a blown speaker safely

Why not just rebuild the EV 12L (or have it rebuilt for you)? There are always kits and people who rebuild pro audio speakers. I had good luck with the folks at The Speaker Exchange in Florida when I had to rebuild the woofers on my JBL 4301B monitors. https://reconingspeakers.com (as the disclaimer...

Re: Thread Size Around XLR Barrel on Condenser Mics

^^^
Mike is spot-on. They're all different. From mics I have owned, I know a Neumann TLM103 and an MXL v69 and a Shure KSM 44 all have different threads. I assume with calipers and a thread gauge you could determine if they are at least standard metric sizes...
