I've tracked acoustic guitars using a number of guitars & methods, usually involving more then one mic or a combination of mics & pickups. I've never liked close mics on an acoustic, although I've never had a good omni to do it with either. Still, sometimes it works even w/ condensors. Usually I'll ...

I play at a coffee shop once a month singing & playing guitar. Since I don't own a pa & I don't need much amplification there (just a little to cut through the exspresso machine), I use a guitar amp. Originally I used an older fender princton, but I've since upgraded to a deluxe reverb (on the clean...

where to get an old rca ribbon reconditioned?
I recently stumbled upon an old rca bk5 (sorry - can't remember the exact model # - it's shaped sorta like a big ice cream cone, the '5' model in the series w/ the three-way tone switch on the back) in a somewhat musty, dank garage. It works okay (actually it's killer on guitar cabs) & the ribbon ap...

Normally, and I could be wrong about this, reverb is more of a slapback kind of effect, up to about 300-500 milli-sec. Longer than that is considered 'echo'. Most analog non-tape non-spring reverbs do up to about 200-500 milli-sec. Some go longer. They usually cost more too. Some have internal trim ...

Joel Hamilton suggested if you need more gain from the EH tube pre, run it from one Eh pre into [/i]another EH pre. I haven't had the funds to get a second EH tube pre yet, & I wonder about overloading the input of the second pre, but if Joel says it works.... p.s. If I have misquoted or misundersto...

api 7625 ?
Howdy I recently bought (very cheaply - $35) a 'solitech 4125' powered mixer that also has a preamp out line & spring reverb. Thought it might be interesting. 4 lines in, one line out, & i assume a 25 watt amplifier. It was really dirty, so I decided to disasseble it enough to clean the pots. After ...

I've posted this before, but, when I took my latest guitar in to have an undersaddle pickup installed, my luthier told me about this new one called 'b-band'(?). He said a lot of bluegrass players had brought them in to have installed & that's how he learned of them. He said it works almost like a co...

you can track direct and re-amp through different amps/ mics/ mic positions/ pre's/ comps etc. It can save your ass if you screw up while tracking. You misunderstood my question. I wasn't asking what a reamp is for, I was asking if you can use a $69 (or so - I haven't checked prices) passive di bac...

Not meaning to hijack tour thread, however. There's been some discussions here as to whether hooking up a passive DI backwards is really the 'same' as using a reamp (you could try a search). I'm not an electronics guy & the language was a little over my head, but if it was true, why would anyone buy...

I'm not an expert, so I can only pass on what I've been able to 'pick-up' from my luthier. I have a kalamazoo epiphone acoustic that originally had an adjustable bridge, & I wanted to put an under-saddle pickup on it. He told me for under-the -saddle pickups to work well, they need to have a very ti...

My understanding is that if the noise is location dependent, then it's an RFI issue. Think about it, if the source of the noise is from your wall outlet, then you're position in the room should have no effect on the noise at all. RFI however, is all about location & proximity. About computer monitor...
