John Tchicai wrote in all sorts of odd meters, and was able to make them swing and sound natural. I've got a bunch of charts from when I was playing bass with him in the Archetypes. I'm happy to pass a few on if you're interested. He's known for the outside "free jazz" side, but wrote and performed ...

"The Shape of Jazz to Come" and then "Virgin Beauty" (Prime Time) were two of the most influential albums for me both as a musician and as a composer.

Ornette was one of a kind for sure.

I've also purchased my last two Macs from OWC. One nice thing is that they'll custom-configure even a used Mac to your specs. I went with a 2012 MBPro with 16gigs RAM and their "Data Doubler" to add a 2nd internal drive (SSD) where the DVD drive usually goes. It's a monster for recording (with a 2nd...

I don't want to be pilloried here, but I am primarily a bassist (with all sorts of amps and preamps), and for the last couple years have been running through a Black Lion BLA73 and then use IK's Amplitube (generally either the Ampeg SVX plugs or Bass Player's bundle) to get an "amp in a room" sound....

This would be my pick:

AMAZING tube tone clean or dirty at low volumes. It's what a Fender Blues Jr. wishes it could be.

Komplete is pretty "complete." There's not much that's not there. I bought it primarily for Kontakt and Battery, but now I use Reaktor more than anything. Massive, FM8 and Absynth are unique and useful in their own ways. I also use AAS String Studio and Ultimate Analog sometimes, and their other plu...

I used to have a 238 paired with my Tascam M-1600 8-bus console. The inline monitoring and D-SUB connections make routing a breeze, and the sound quality is more than adequate. I still use my M-1600 to monitor and mix OTB. There's one on eBay now for not too much. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tascam-M-16...

I converted a cheap MXL mic with a kit and diaphragm from these guys and it's great. The mic went from a busted piece of crap to a perfectly legit vocal mic that holds its own against some much higher end.

I just remembered why I hate eBay so much...

I found a bunch of my old Opcode music software 3.5" floppies and manuals for long outdated programs and figured I'd list them on eBay and see what happens. I had a $0.99 opening bid and a $25.00 Buy it Now. I was surprised that it sold within a couple of hours for the Buy it Now price. I packed the...
