I will say one other thing - I hate having two mics placed closely in front of me. It makes me claustrophobic. No kidding. My space is so tight and awkward as is, I'm tripping all over stuff in this little space above my garage. Its a clown show for shure.

A different preamp is not going to compensate for the lack of proximity, and you can't really boost low end that isn't there to begin with. It's a tough one. I think this is really what i was getting at. If the mic isn't picking up any lows due to positioning, I didn't know if boosting the lows wou...

Maybe start with the mic about chin height, or a little lower and maybe a foot and a half back, and adjust to suit? I did this tonight, which I have done before and couldn't get the balance between the sources correct (guitar was overpowering the vocal). Tonight for whatever reason it seemed to wor...

If the reason you only want to use the 58 is for "lo-fi-ness", just get another one for the guitar. It would technically still be "recorded on 4 track with one mic!!!" So you won't lose any street cred. Not necessarily lo-fi for the sake of lo-fi, but an economic challenge. I'm lovingly working on ...

Overhead as in, over your head? Or relative to the guitar? Have you tried adjusting the performance dynamics, i.e. sing louder/play softer? Are you wearing headphones to monitor? Yes, over my head, mic angled down. I can't adjust my dynamics much without changing the feel of the song. I kinda pound...

help with sm58, placement, getting more bottom end

Hello there. I use an sm58 to record vocals and acoustic guitar at the same time. I record to a tascam portastudio. I am not interested in using a different mic or different recording medium. My problem is in order to balance the volume between the guitar and vocals I end up having to put the mic ov...

New EP recorded with an SM57 and a 4 track cassette recorder

Check it out. http://bbrains.bandcamp.com/album/moist-banana-panties I recorded these gems in my garage with an SM57, SM58, Tascam 424MKIII portastudio, some guitars and percussion. It was mixed and mastered professionally. This is the second EP i've done with just this simple setup. Bass was done i...

I think you'll get support here for listening to whatever you want as long as you don't say you're doing it because it sounds better. If it's a "workflow" or "playflow" issue it's valid, but if you think CD's sound better than mp3's or flac or vinyl, you're nuts. I think I can honestly say that my ...

good to hear...I expected to be called an old guy or out of touch (its probably coming any minute). I'm not even that old, 39, which is old enough to have grown up with the pleasures of physical music formats.

Rat Farm - the meat puppets lastest album (though a year or two old). I love those guys. Their last three albums are absolutely killer in my opinion.

I'm going back to cds as my primary

that's it, i'm going back to cds instead of downloads or streaming as my primary. Not that I won't ever download, but... I've gone back and forth twice now and I think I can conclude my listening experience is all around better when I have a cd. I primarily listen in my car on commutes and I just do...

Well I think i've decided that a simple sm58 sounds the best for my particular situation, which is recording acoustic guitar and vocals simultaneously with a single mic. Although, I haven't tried a bunch of condensers. I have been recording a bunch of tunes and I have used an SM58, Beyer m88, beyer ...
