Re: Commercial studios: how do you charge?

When I was running a studio I used day and half-day rates for recording, and mixing was billed per song. I've done hourly rates for sound design and game audio stuff, but in my experience, that's too complicated for musician clients :D

Not my cleanest solder job but I used a solder sucker for the first time ever (what an invention!).
Congrats on your first suck!

Re: pres on Focusrite interfaces?

I haven't used Focusrite, but I think their whole thing is putting really good preamps in affordable interfaces! At least, I remember the first few models making a splash because of that.

Re: making a mix room in a long narrow space

Use this calculator! https://amcoustics.com/tools/amroc?l=16&w=7.5&h=10.5&ft=true&r60=0.6 The dimensions as-is are inside the "Bolt area" (google it), which means the resonant frequencies don't overlap too much. If you take 5-6 feet off the length, you're outside the bolt area and getting worse freq...

Re: A polite linux request

I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop to give it a try and... I want to like it, but some things are just frustrating. For example, getting my VPN installed and connected involved a bunch of Terminal commands rather than just downloading and installing an app. I had to do even more command line stuff...

Re: Should I bear down and learn Melodyne?

For pitch-correcting piano, I just set it to maximum sensitivity to detect every note and overtone, then selected everything and used the pitch macro to nudge it all to 50% in tune. Worked like a charm as far as I can tell, and I might even start using it in a more subtle way for individual fretless...

Re: Should I bear down and learn Melodyne?

I just got the Melodyne 5 trial to pitch-correct an album's worth of out-of-tune piano, and it's been a total lifesaver. I'm not even scratching the surface of everything it can do, but it's amazing at differentiating notes and overtones, etc. And yeah, you can tune the "pitch drift" (vibrato) witho...

Re: Acoustic Panels (DIY? Cheap?)

Soundproofing is hard, especially ceilings. I did something similar to what MSE suggested at my last studio; I might have some pictures of the process. DM me if you want more info on that! Unfortunately, even if you do a pretty good job on the ceiling, there's still the door to the basement and the ...

the concept of sound swirling around your head in stereo, not just a panning mono source, has been an obsession ever since.
You need to get into Ambisonics!

Re: M/S guitars and other stuff

I thought I did it for the guitar on this song: https://caleyconway.bandcamp.com/track/love-is-sex But I found a picture from the session and I was wrong - it was actually a shotgun mic pointed at the amp from across a big warehouse room, with an ORTF pair of condensers where the side mic would go ...

Re: limiting busses in rock music - digital

I'd say limit it to two buses max - one for the band and one for the crew. Any more than that is just extra pollution!

Re: Starting a small studio business

I'll second workingclassaudio's site/podcast... it's great! also — if you end up liking that podcast, you might even consider investing a little money in the creator's "premium" subscription. He used to do this through patreon; but now uses another platform... The podcast is free, but you have the ...

Re: Starting a small studio business

Buying gear and plugins is fun, but it feels sooooooooooo much better to pay rent or bills with money you made from your passion rather than sinking that money right back into the studio. In my opinion, that's what makes it a career instead of a hobby.

Re: Starting a small studio business

https://www.workingclassaudio.com/ <---------This Also some unsolicited advice: maybe wait a while and see what things are like post-Covid. It may take a long time for in-person sessions to be viable again, or artists may shift even more to home recording (this is what I see happening). Definitely s...
