Re: Setup advice for Tascam M35 and 38 tape machine?

After many ups and downs with my old 38, I'd just say be very careful when it comes to calibration. I got an MRL test tape and did that whole thing, only to fuck up several cards by burning out the bias pots. My advice is to calibrate it just enough so it sounds nice and consistent across channels, ...

Re: DAW as live mixer suggestions

Seems like a DAW would just complicate things, why not use the onboard mixing firmware on a modern networked audio interface? MOTU's AVB interfaces are really good, and they all have a built-in mixer that runs on the device itself, which you control in your browser on a laptop or mobile device. No D...

Re: Question: side chain compression' what, why and how

The "what" and "how" you can easily find with a quick search. Basically, it's a way to trigger a compressor on one track with signal from another track. How you set it up depends on which plugin you're using. As for the "why," many people use sidechain compression to help certain tracks stand out in...

Sidechain? Or, next time you track, choose cymbals and a snare that complement each other.

Re: Who has used Ramsa boards?

I don't know about that particular model, but I used to have a Ramsa WR-8118 and the 24-channel version (forgot the model number). Recorded a lot of rock, punk, etc. with them and loved the sound for that stuff. The preamps and EQs always felt like they were adding something (in a good way). Might n...

Re: Trying to recreate Camel Crusher

Recreating your old plugin settings in a new plugin will teach you a ton about what it's actually doing and how to get the best performance out of it. I say never trust a plugin to be around forever, and instead learn how to get what you want with any plugin!

Re: shedshrine 3.0 build

(Seriously, if everybody in the world were happy, I think art would suffer tremendously.) I used to think this way too. But imagine how much great art would happen if everyone had their basic needs taken care of so they could devote more time and attention to art? Great things can come from joy and...

Are you talking about individual files of drum hits and loops, a full-fledged Kontakt instrument, or an SFX library?

Re: Inexpensive options & recommendations for talkback

At my old studio I just plugged a cheap gooseneck mic into the last channel on the board and used the mute switch as a "talkback button". Routed that signal to everyone's headphones except mine and it worked fine! There are also solutions like this if you need a convenient momentary switch: https://...

I think they have different fee structures but both are pretty affordable. I went with ASCAP because I thought the UI on their site was nice and simple.

I wanted to use Reaper recently, but I couldn't even figure out how to arm a track. So I'm back to doing "sound on sound" in Audacity.
