Re: M/S guitars and other stuff

I thought I did it for the guitar on this song: https://caleyconway.bandcamp.com/track/love-is-sex But I found a picture from the session and I was wrong - it was actually a shotgun mic pointed at the amp from across a big warehouse room, with an ORTF pair of condensers where the side mic would go i...

Re: limiting busses in rock music - digital

I'd say limit it to two buses max - one for the band and one for the crew. Any more than that is just extra pollution!

Re: Starting a small studio business

I'll second workingclassaudio's site/podcast... it's great! also — if you end up liking that podcast, you might even consider investing a little money in the creator's "premium" subscription. He used to do this through patreon; but now uses another platform... The podcast is free, but you have the ...

Re: Starting a small studio business

Buying gear and plugins is fun, but it feels sooooooooooo much better to pay rent or bills with money you made from your passion rather than sinking that money right back into the studio. In my opinion, that's what makes it a career instead of a hobby.

Re: Starting a small studio business

https://www.workingclassaudio.com/ <---------This Also some unsolicited advice: maybe wait a while and see what things are like post-Covid. It may take a long time for in-person sessions to be viable again, or artists may shift even more to home recording (this is what I see happening). Definitely s...

also, if you were not using all functions of the mixer, maybe you could just cover part with a standard bath towel? cheap, easy to move, and washable.
I should clarify - I'm talking about a literal desk (Output Platform), not a mixing desk.

Re: Acoustic absorption for desk surfaces

How about a modified rubber floor mat that you could cut to fit all the surfaces? Good idea, but do you think rubber would be absorbent enough? My Be Quiet PC case has got some sort of acoustic padding on the inside panels, sort of like this but higher quality: https://www.newegg.com/silverstone-sf...

Re: Acoustic absorption for desk surfaces

Treating the ceiling above your desk/listening area is so much more important. Luckily, my ceiling has a texture which gives it a bit of diffusion. Unluckily, it would be tricky to hang a cloud from. Maybe I'll consider some absorption up there in the future, but for now I'm just talking about the ...

Acoustic absorption for desk surfaces

I just got a new desk that has a very large work surface, which I love, but I realize it's going to introduce some reflections (my old setup was arranged in such a way that this wasn't an issue). Has anyone here used acoustic absorption on their actual work surface, as opposed to walls? If so, what ...

Re: Studio Embarrassments

Wasted at least an hour trying to track down the terrible distortion I thought was coming from my tape deck or mixer, only to realize it was the shitty B*hringer headphone amp I was using.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Just ordered this little thing off eBay: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/sW0AAOSwPuNfzBVo/s-l1600.jpg I've really been wanting to record fretless bass on a track, and thought about either buying a cheap full-size one (but I don't need another giant instrument taking up space) or de-fretting my curren...

Re: Identify this drum machine sound

No idea what model, but it sounds like one of those "rhythm boxes" that come attached to cheap organs or sometimes as standalone units. They usually have a bunch of patterns to choose from, but can't actually be "played" like a drum machine.
