Re: My old MOTU is on its last legs -- strong opinions on interfaces welcome
I've been using MOTU for years and currently have an 828es. I love it! The older units used to have some stability issues but this thing and the rest of the AVB line have been rock-solid for me. Might sell soon to upgrade; DM me if you're interested. You could probably still use the 8pre as an expan...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I've had a number of studios in the last 20 years that weren't "perfect" and as much as I wanted this one to be "perfect", reality finally hit me that it's just not going to happen. I was at the same place when I built my latest garage space. At certain point I had to ask myself if I wanted to be s...

Simply disconnecting, cleaning and reseating the ribbon cables might be an easy fix!

Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....
Just listed my Ashbory bass with a bunch of accessories on Reverb. I bought it sort of as a "treat yourself" thing, and because I had a song I wanted that sound for, but haven't picked it up in ages. Hoping someone will be psyched to get the whole package with a case, strap, new good strings, and ev...

Re: Trust digitally-controlled preamps or not?
In theory, they'd be more reliable than hardware-controlled preamps, right? The actual preamp circuit is still analog, but there's no potentiometer to get dirty and scratchy.

Re: recommend replacement software for CD ARCHITECT
If you literally just need to see the waveforms, any DAW will do. If you want more detailed info like LUFS and peak levels, Orban Loudness Meter is a good free app for that: https://www.orban.com/meter If you want spectrogram view and much more, iZotope RX has a cheap basic version and you can find ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Here's the 50's Hofner Classical post repairs. It had been strung with steel strings, left for a long, long, long time and developed all the issues you can imagine going along with that. The top an bridge were miraculously ok but the neck joint was loose and the action was super high. It had also h...

Re: How much do you "fix" without telling your client?
I used to do basically what you just described all the time. The important part is to get a good take and a few backup takes, then fixing small things as needed is easy. As you listen back with the band/artist to pick the good takes, make notes of things you can easily fix (they might be surprised t...

Re: Let's talk your favourite manual fades
Funny, I almost never do manual fades but I do spend a lot of time finding the perfect fade-out curves in Reaper or Nuendo. Sometime's I'll even draw automation for a custom fade, but I never perform it manually.

Re: Modding noisy monitors
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm fairly certain it's the class D amps - the noise starts when the speakers are turned on and doesn't change no matter what they're connected to, gain level doesn't change anything, etc. From searching online it sounds like a known issue, and since I have 5 of thes...

Modding noisy monitors
I recently got some JBL LSR306P MkII monitors for a really good price. They sound fantastic and just as good or better than my old M-Audio 8-inch monitors they replaced. Overall amazing speakers for the price. The only drawback is that they're pretty noisy. There's a constant hiss no matter what the...
