i generally consider "on-axis" to be at a 90` angle to the source. I would consider placing a microphone off-center to the cone, but at a 90` angle to be "on-axis" - but that might just be me. I can't think of a time I've liked what a 57 90` at the center of a cone sounds like. It's just too much. P...

for those of you phase flipping monitor spill, especially on things like orchestras or string sections, how big of a difference does it make if the room is empty or full?

I've been doing what you're talking about for live takes, but not overdubs yet, though I've been considering it. How do you monitor ODs normally? Does the 001 have direct monitoring? If not, you'll hear some latency anyway, digitally. The best monitoring solution may be to monitor off the mic pre. T...

no doubt.
i mean, the recorder was in plain sight.
and it was in the car.

furthermore, just go to court and say you thought the police were terrorists, and you can do anything.

using two comps or a comp then a limiter on vox isn't too uncommon.

but the FIRST thing you should do is put on a comp on. get it so it is pulling out 3-5 dB when she gets loud. then if you need more edge, only if you need more edge, but on an L1.

if her voicals are already cutting, you definitely don't need the L1. I've used L1 on vox before, but only to make them REALLY cut and stand out. And always with compressor prior in the chain.

RenComp is GREAT.
Also look into Blockfish. i think it's free. great comp for vox, or 2 bus.

And don't forget, Nyquist Theorem or not Tape>Tape>Mastering is magnificent. Having a high-end mastering facility commit your material to digital with the best converters, word clock, esoteric cable and the like yields the best end result. Sounds like we're talking SPARS codes here, but honestly, a...

Well, in a studio setting, I typically use a condensor for vox.

If I use a dynamic mic for vox, 9 times out of ten I use a Beta 58.

I work in a studio with a MOTU 24i/o and a 3M 16-track 2" machine. I've recorded DAW->Tape->DAW. and i've done Tape->DAW. Tape->DAW sound much better than DAW->Tape->DAW. I think this is for two reasons. 1. you're loosing a conversion step, which inheritely means you have less distortion with Tape->...
