Re: what do these switches do? (on my new AT4050)

i find that using the low-cut switch on the mic is typically a bad idea. like googacky said, it removes any low rumble noise and what not. but for most recording perposes, it's a better idea to decide that in the mix. then you have more options if things sound thin..... you never know. the only appl...

Re: gtr cab mics

i've heard the 421 referred to as the European 57, cause it's used there on everything, like 57s are used here in the states.

Just the other day the owner of the studio I work at was telling me about an ad that used to run with a 357 Magnum firing right next to a 421. How rugged!

Re: Mastering a home-recorded digital 8 track opus

By all means, don't leave anything up to the mastering engineer to fix, besides perhaps overall level. Too many times I've seen projects come in with mastering notes like "the kick is too boomy on track 3" and the client expects it to be cleaned up. While the lowend in generel will get cleaned up in...

Re: trying to burn disc without track separation pops

iTunes is definately not the way to go here. It's very much a user-friendly consumer CD burning app. and doesn't do much besides be convienent. As far as Toast goes, I usually wind up using Jam in the studio because it handles audio in a more specialized manner. But, I've burnt seemless CDs in both ...

what will succeed the NS10s as the "industry standard?&

Hillary brought up the point that NS-10s, although considered the "industry standard," are no longer being made in the "how much should NS10s cost" thread. This got me thinking... What will take their place now that the NS10s are relatively unavailable? OR, will people continue to seek out them out ...

Re: I hate the D112

I have to agree with Joel. I've heard the D112 sound great inside the kick with a 421 or 47FET outside. But, I'd have to say, more times than not, it's placement that makes the biggest difference to kick sounds. If you're unhappy with the D112, perhaps you haven't found it's sweet spot on the given ...

Re: Matador, Kill Rock Stars, SpinART Bring Indie Rock To iT

I got fed up with "sound check" very quickly. As first, I thought I would be a great idea, so that older recordings like the Velvet Underground would sound fine next to newer stuff like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. After a week or so, I found myself constantly turning up the newer, louder stuff because the ...
