One thing you may think into account is that a track with more hi freq. content will be interpret by our ears as panned more toward the extreme of the stereo field. So this is something you may have in mind when making your balance and panning. Also, playing with depth-of-field among the stereo elem...

In theory as in practice, these techniques might be super cool! But.....You need a really great sounding room. It not seem to be exactly your case as you mentioned in your post. Secondly, as you have a very limited time, I would not suggest you to go with these techniques first. I would rather sugge...

To get this first take result, I look at a studio day like a collection of little recording events. Funnily, my best producer's move are 99% when I call for a 10 minutes break at the best moment (always by intuition). At that moment I KNOW that when we'll go back...it will happens in the first two t...

That's exactly how I always envision things in the studio!

Thanks, Drumsound. Cool to receive your appreciation. And yeah, we are on the same page as for the solo button. In fact, what I noticed, is that not using the solo button when eq'ing, give you the mastering engineer perspective, which I think is always a good thing (to have the "ears" of the next pe...

I'm always starting with the drummer first: having him balancing his kit in his playing (especially with those who play live most of the time). Secondly: work with the cymbals. Changing them if necessary and even taming them with gel or soft cotton. Third: that's why I use 90% of the time ribbon mic...

Third: Mix at low volume, the same as a normal conversation. low volume mean less "triggering" of the room modes. I think this advice is spot on except for the reason given for #3. You want to mix at a moderate volume to avoid Fletcher-Munson affect exaggeration of certain frequencies. Room modes a...

Some simple tricks regarding your problem. First, try other placements in the room. Make sure you have more that 3 feet between your speakers and the wall behind. Second, get the "mixing with your mind" book by Stavrou. It's pricey but it really worth 10 times the investment. And most of all, he hav...

I suggest you the cheapest Native instruments bundle Komplete elements 8. There is the abbey road drums (60's) that sound fantastic plus orchestral percussions from the vienna library. It cost 59$!!! But check with n.instruments to make sure. That was the bundle I got at the time of version 7. Cheers

As harp is a complex instrument on an harmonic standpoint, I'll definitely suggest you to overdub the voice. But if I had to do that I'll put an Sm7 close on the voice and a ribbon pointing at the harp so the null of the figure-8 would be in the axis of the singer. And if I'm not satisfied, instead ...

Stereo miking is all about slighty time and phase difference. Unless you have a real phase cancellation that may produced a drop level when checking the two mics in mono, and that that you achieve the tone you were looking for, don't worry about volume difference. Of course, make sure you have good ...
