If you have the capability to output the 10 tracks as a 2 track, it might work well to have a rough mix print to the Zoom and record in 4 track. I do this a lot with bands on stage and take the 2 track from the board. Otherwise I'd say this looks like a pretty solid setup. Only question I have is is...

if you have to crank the preamp for your AKG C414 then I would agree you've got something going wrong. bad cable? bad preamp? something not staged right into your DAW or whatever you are recording on? I don't ever seem to have a problem with gain with my 414's. Mike I'd agree, but I have never used...

If you want isolation from a vocal mic in that situation, your best bet is a figure 8 pattern. I doubt it will prevent all bleed, but it should help with it, just make sure the soundboard (as mentioned by A.David.MacKinnon) is in the null of the 8. I've used an SM81 on the soundboard before and gott...

Certain things that work on the collegiate level may not work as well in Middle or Secondary school, but it's worth a shot. I definitely agree that things that work at the collegiate level don't necessarily work at the lower levels. Especially when you have a live performer who has a patented respo...

I'm from Lombard actually and get back that way fairly often. My best friend works in Algonquin's municipal garage and he has a show tonight in Villa Park that I'd love to be able to make it to, but, alas, I sadly will not. :(

I'd get in touch with Mark Rubel as he does an excellent job teaching the rock portion of a (general education)* course entitled, "The Evolution of Jazz & Rock" at EIU. One of the things that he would do that seemed to get the most interest from the students was bringing in bands and doing a recordi...

+1 for decent monitors and lots of room treatment. if you have money left over after that, getting a second 414 would be cool. a great mic preamp is nice to have, but I wouldn't put it too high up on the list of priorities at this point. this is also assuming you have adequate mix down capabilities...

+1 for the Cloudlifter. 25 dB with the gain of the Audient should be plenty to power a ribbon without issue. I haven't used the Peluso, but I have used a number of other ribbons and find that, on some of my lower-gain preamps, I need something to boost the signal.

Speciman Audio is pretty reputable and have great turnaround usually. Plus, if you're delivering it yourself, they do some interesting speaker design.

Frank Sinatra It's so true. Frank (God rest his soul) was not the best singer when it came to intonation (to put it politely), but even when he was out of tune, it fit. That's what counts. For the record, he definitely wasn't the worst I've heard either. At one point, I fashioned myself a singer......

I personally haven't had too many issues with AT shock mounts being able to hold the mics in place. What exactly are you trying to do that requires these mounts to be so much more, "Precise" and why/how are they moving so much? I'm sure there are alternatives, but I'd rather see if it can be fixed w...

On the zoom: Mike likes the idea of a standalone hardware solution, and I love the idea of having a field recorder lying aroun to play with, but it's not really what were looking for. Remember when you would record a new song on the 4 track, mix it onto the tape deck on your stereo and then give it...

Something like a Zoom H4n sounds like the right thing for what you're describing. There's a bit of a learning curve to their interface, but it's pretty simple and generally reliable. Best part is it's well under the budget.

Short answer, I agree with LimpyLoo. Long answer, see below. I've never much been a fan of using a tuner on vocals as it tends to over look the underlying "ailment". Only thing that ever worked on that ailment for me were actual voice lessons and Solf?ge. One quick practice trick that worked for me ...

Often times if the Mac shipped with a higher OS, they can't downgrade (think this isn't the case with your situation, but don't quote me on that). That being said, Pro Tools does not support Mountain Lion yet. We haven't heard any exact date, but an update is in the works in the relatively near futu...
