Re: is echo layla 3g best buy of its kind?

I've seen the 3G at a street price of $499.

I'm really tempted to get it, but heck, my Layla20 is still working great!! Besides, what's up with the I/O configuration? Six 1/4" inputs on the back and two on the front? Sorta hard to connect to a patchbay.

Re: I just shot my room

My old business partner & I did that exercise in his control room. It was about 11 x 12 x 9. Really horrid dimensions. Our graph was all over the map, too. The bass was about 6 dB higher in the rear of the room. What we did was take 4 48" Sonotubes filled with fiberglass and move them around the roo...

Re: Drop Ceiling Tiles?

Ethan,

Thanks! That is really good information to know. Since my tiles are so close to the trusses, I don't think I'd be able to put in another layer.

Re: Drop Ceiling Tiles?

Ethan, What about the dead air space above the panels? Any rule of thumb for that? I put up standard 2x2 fiberglass panels 3 inches below my 24 inch floor trusses. Am I making up for lack of mass by having a large volume of dead air space? It really reduced the reflections and flutter echo in my spa...

Well, if I would just read all the new threads before I ask questions...found the answer in an earlier post. Thanks.

Re: kick drum mics piss me off

I agree with you on kick drums. Overall, I've been the happiest with an Sm-57 and a 12" Celestion Speaker used as a microphone. I've heard of people using speakers as BD mics, but haven't seen what the interface looks like. How do you get it into the mixer? Just as an unbalanced 1/4" input, or is t...

Re: small guitar amps for recording

Try the new speaker route. I had an Ampeg Reverborocket II that had a similar sound/problem as the Silvertone. I put an Altec in it and it opened right up! More apparent highs, plus it was louder. The curious thing is my budy who was an amp tech warned me not to do it. He said it wouldn't make a dif...

Re: phase reversal in cubase?

In Sonar, it's pretty simple. Take the side component track and "clone" it, press the phse reverse button on one of these two tracks, pan the two side tracks left & right, and you're done. You should be able to check to make sure the tracks are out of phase by panning both side tracks center - if th...

Re: phase reversal in cubase?

I've been using this technique successfully with Sonar, which has a reverse phase button in the I/O section. Not sure about Cubase, but look for a symbol that looks like a zero with a slash through it. Which mics are you using for the middle and side components? I've been recording my band's gigs us...

Re: Food and Drink in the room... Yeah or nay?

Basically, "no beer on the gear," and unless you like cleaning your faders, etc., no smoking in the room, either. Several years ago (1989), I was seconding on a seesion with a famous engineer for some lame dance music by two fops from Italy. This engineer was getting furious with them over some deta...

Re: Fender Precsiosn bass - opinion needed

I have a '72 p-bass that I put Bartolini's in soon after I traded my '73 Jazz for it. My bass teacher and I bought the wrong instruments about 4 months apart... Anyway, the stock pups were so noisy, I had to do something. I don't find them to sound any less (or more) like standard Fender pups, but t...

This is gonna sound really stupid, but where is the rest of the interview? The page where it is supposed to be continued is a gear review. Or am I just going blind?

Re: Gibson's Underdog - The SG

I bought my white '61 SG Special w/P90's in a pawn shop for $165. My luthier pal had just come back from Gibson factory training and called to find out the date, etc. Turns out it was made during the transition from LP to SG. He also got the word that pretty much what Les Paul had said in the interv...
