Re: How much do you "fix" without telling your client?

Good topic. Honestly, editing takes too long. Even with digital tools, it’s a massive time waster. How long for them to nail a new take? 4 minutes? 4 hours? 40 hours? That’s nothing compared to editing. We could easily spend 100 hours on our own time trying to fix crap that isn’t right, it can alway...

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better

So many hard lessons... :D The one that really bothers me still: I didn’t get that fatheads ribbon mics were figure 8. Overheads it was like a tile room from the ceiling reflections, impossible to chill the cymbals out or get detail with EQ. When next victims wanted to record live, I decided ...

Re: MDR-7506 or ATH-M50x vs all the DT’s

I picked up the 16ohm DT 770 since apparently Guitar Center offered them years ago for a bit, and I wanted to know if these are what I heard back then. Ordered on sale from Focus Camera, the transaction was smooth, free 2 day shipping. They arrived and had a label on the box “Created exclusively for...

Re: Going for it

I’ll offer a little diff perspective.. When I think fugazi I think bleed/room sounds. Think of your mics as parallel busses, the more bleed the denser other sources will be. A defined kick is important in today’s recordings, and many players don’t kick hard enough to get that trebly stuff to cut int...

Re: I need help High Passing

In an effort to give the drums and bass more room in the mix and to help other instruments to have their space i bought a high pass filter to use. I've got some basic questions and would love to hear how you people high pass. Specifically: Electric Piano - Rhodes, Wurly, Pianet, etc. I'm at a cross...

Re: MDR-7506 or ATH-M50x vs all the DT’s

Thanks for the responses everyone! Very helpful! I found a good video on the Beyer website that explains the different impedances as simply bigger or smaller voice coil. The side question, they say the higher ohms were popular in broadcast to save eardrums in an accidental patch situation, low ohms ...

Re: Two parter: Getting mic bleed to work for you, and the phase differences between nudging tracks and moving mics.

I never time align because I absolutely love how drums always sounded. However if you do want that not so enjoyable punchy sound, I think of it like ‘overhead mic up close’. Get your overheads in phase. Then you line up the close mics ITB, and gate them/edit them so they have zero bleed and simply s...

MDR-7506 or ATH-M50x vs all the DT’s

Hi everyone, It’s time for me to get some headphones for long hours editing, low end management, and general purpose. I work with a reel to reel deck quite often so I really need to hear the noise floor. Sennheisers I like a lot but are not for me right now. I used to have 7506’s, they walked away l...

Mac Demarco - thank you!

:worthy: Most insightful interview I have read in years and years!!! I can't tell if this guy is the luckiest guy in the world or if he's just a super genius pretending to be lucky. Whatever it is, smartest choice he made was use his ear and instead of going to forums for help. I hope digital works ...

Who still makes tape heads in 2015?

Hi guys and girls, I'm wondering who in the world is still making tape heads? Or anyone who has some personal experience making them in the past. My Studer a80 is setup to switch between 16/24 track. Also have some MCI 2 tracks they could use some love. Dreaming of 16 track headstack. Google shows m...
