I'm losing my mastering VIRGINITY on Monday

Sorry for the yellow-journalistic subject heading, but I'm sending my first CD off to get Mastered on Monday, and I'm scared shitless. Here are the mp3s, and I'd love to get some of your thoughts before it's too late to get criticism. http://sidewalkatlas.com/blog/st393/ P.S. I know that the one tra...

Anything that Dave Fridmann has done (Flaming Lips comes to mind). Anything that Peter Katis has done. A lot of Led Zeppelin and Beatles, especially on rhythm sections. (See: when the "Levee Breaks," "She Said, She Said"). Vocals on a lot of indie pop-rock stuff. Vocals on a lot of mainstream pop r...

Yea, sometimes I send my vocals to a bus that has a virtual amp and then mix that in liberally. But I guess that's another topic altogether, haha.

This is all really great stuff. I'm listening to this Metric "Stadium Love" track right now, and its clear that there's almost no dynamic range left in her vocals. But do I care? Not really. Thanks for the support guys! I guess what I'm going to do is have some songs on the record where I have nice ...

uh oh, I think I like "overcompression"...

So I've had lots of people tell me things like "don't overcompress the vocals" and "try to use gain automation before the compressor so that you don't make the compressor work too hard." All of these things have made scared to really push a compressor. I've always used its very liberally. However, I...

Thanks so much. All of these guys sound great. Anyone else? At this point I'm just gathering names so that I can pull the trigger as soon as mixing is done. So I'm happy to consider all names at this point. Ie: price is not a factor (but distance is a factor since I have to be able to drive there).

Okay, last part of my question- Is anyone afraid of losing any of the psychoacoustic content by removing some of that "air" range? Ie: the sounds that we don't necessarily hear, but that we definitly feel? My science of music professor, Mark Ballora, always cited a study that was done where they pla...

Whats the use of high-cut?

So, I know that a low-cut filter is a great use in mixing for removing masking frequencies in the low end. Like I often get rid of everything below 80ish hz from backup vocals anything that's not a bass-heavy instrument. And I can "understand" that this gives me more volument to play with. But I've ...

Thank you both for the recommendations. As I'm still in the investigation phase, I'd still love to hear some more recommendations. I'm willing to drive an hour or two, so if the engineer is between State College-PA, the Jersey Shore, and NYC then I'll consider them. Looking forward to hearing your s...

Looking for a Philadelphia area Mastering Engineer

Hi there. I'm almost done mixing my first album and I'd like to work with a mastering engineer who is relatively local. I live in the Philadelphia area. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not sure what my budget is right now. I'm running out of dough (as my wife keeps reminding me, haha), but...
