Fascinating article, Apropos. Thanks! I once lost a large number of sessions that I was working on, despite having it backed up on another drive; it's an experience that has stuck with me for years. I'm now considering having vinyl made for my final releases, so that my kids have an actual product t...

Best Medium For Long Term Storage?
I'd love to hear some opinions on what the best medium is for the long term storage of a song in its finished form (not the session). Tape, vinyl, digital, something else? What holds up the longest? Which medium is most likely to still have gear around to play it in 100 years?

The more records I make, the less and less important the gear becomes I really agree with this. You need some gear, obviously, but not much. I enjoyed the film. My favorite quote in it came from Reznor: "Now that everyone is empowered with these tools to create stuff, has there been a lot more grea...

The further away you are, the more delay there will be. If you want to test it, run a click to the headphones, record the audio coming out of the headphones into a mic, and then record that to a different track on the computer. If the audio looks/sounds like it's too off, then you have a problem. If...

Chet Atkins
Seeing as how I've played guitar for about 20 years, I'm a little embarrassed to say I'm just now exploring Atkins' music in a more thorough way. But it's a process that I'm grateful to have saved for later in my life!
Can anyone recommend me some of their favorite albums by him?

I have crushed my own releases before. I have also in more recent years refused to do it. Here's all I can think to add to the issue: 1) For posterity, I have started to favor better sounding final products. Sometimes I'll let things clip the digital realm while recording, because sometimes I like t...

Love all these pictures! I'd post a pic of my collection, but it's pretty small at the moment. I just started seriously collecting vinyl last month. I also wrote a blog entry about why it's so cool to me. It's here if anyone is interested: http://briandorn.net/2013/03/vinyl-the-value-of-music-and-th...

Not to thread-hijack, but thought it worth mentioning that this was the theme of my record. I wanted to make something that sounded like a mixtape in reaction to the very focused genre-fication of music over the last twenty years. I really like older albums that jump around stylistically some. Bauh...
