Yo Tater, I also remember some interview of phil spector where he said he became a record producer because then he could make the records that he wanted. He also said he was screwed out of a lot of money when he had his first hit(as a pop star), and that the producer was the one who made all the mon...

I always look at pop stars as "vessels" for other people who are usually more talented but, because of their advanced age(usually over thirty) , or the fact that they don't look like popstars, would never be popular.

I think I'll play devil's advocate here. If a client sees you making a decision with coins or dice or the magic eight ball, I'm sure they would ask the question "What the hell am i paying this person for?", because it certainly isn't this person's "expertise". If you flip a coin, don't get caught do...

Shocked, shocked and appalled am I at such shady doings. If Joel were honest, he would include a sticker that says "Recorded with REVERB !", or "Recorded by a charlatan whose only mission is to make more money by adding reverb to everything!". If I were him I would also add a voiceover on top of the...

I know this is a thread on snobbery, but we are not... ahem..."nerds". We are much cooler than nerds whether you do this as work or hobby. I prefer to think of tapeoppers as geeks, i.e. someone who has skills that other people could get, but they prefer not to. Like circus freaks who bite the heads ...

Whenever I get to bogged down in gear lust or spend too much time getting A sound, I always try to remember that records more or less started as a souvenir from a performance. Music is a performance art, not something static like a painting or a recording. A great recording is a great recording, but...

The best deal I ever got was a shure level loc at a pawn shop. I asked the guy about the "black box" in the corner, and he said $5, cause i was the only one who had ever asked about it. And this was about a year and a half ago.

and when the heck is someone going to write a Tapeoppers Dictionary. Gritty, warm, fuzzy, and blah blah blah. In this day and age, we should be able to look up gritty and know which pre, comp or mic was used for that song. Seriously, what the heck does a "furry bottom" mean.

The magic ingredient is called ......................LOVE.

sorry, had to say that. Anyway what i notice with alot of older records was there was more room in the mics which i always think gives it a more earthy sound.

Re: what's that sound on the Smiths' "Ask"?

There was an article a few years ago with Johnny Marr where he said it was an harmonica going into a boombox with the "loudness" knob turned all the way up, or something like that. He was just riffing, no vocoders or gates or anything.

Re: Minimalist micing thoughts

If you have a good drummer and a nice room, then you should use less microphones. Recording isn't about wasting resources or trying to impress people with how many mics you have. (or maybe it is  ) But if your drummer aint so hot or you need a lot of isolation, you don't really have a choice w...

Re: Beatles Drums

If you want ringo's sound, just ask him, he seems like a pretty nice guy. If you've ever picked up any beatles bootlegs, he just sounds like that naturally without too much studio chicanery. I love the way he plays, I think he damps the drum head with his stick when he hits the drumhead, or somethin...
