I second what Chris Garges has to say. It is truly ALL about the phase relationships being agreeable. To my ears, I prefer a "bigger than life" kind of drum sound that is rooted in reality and that usually requires a bunch of mics. If I take my time and get them all to work together, then I can achi...

I would say always mic it but decide later if you want to use it or not. If there's enough (or too much) hat in the OHs then you don't need it; but if not , then you're screwed. I mostly mix these days and it seems that people rarely send me a hi-hat mic anymore. The problem is that they don't usual...

Here's a link to my blog about a recording I did last year at The Springs Theatre in Tampa, FL. http://mikemajormix.com/2013/07/recording-mighty-mongo-the-springs-theater-part-deux-with-audio-files/ There's a link in the blog that allows you to download an audio file (you may want to read the explan...

I haven't seen the videos yet, but I'll check 'em out soon. With regards to what Roy Matthews comment about the video's take on M/S: I agree that M/S is an odd choice for OH's particularly because the side channels face away at 90 degrees from the center of the kit. There is not usually much stuff t...

I asked a client of mine who happens to be from Saskatoon. He's on PT8 so no luck there!

He said to try these two:

I can't vouch for either but he said it was worth a try.

Hope that helps!

I use DSP Quattro for digital master assembly and it works great! When using Ver. 3, I experienced a weird bug when creating DDPs but ver 4 has been excellent and solid. It's very easy to use. It kind of reminds me of the old Waveburner software, which I loved. DSP Quattro is highly recommended. Plu...

I have a new post on Shure's blog

Not trying to be spammy but thought that some people here might want to check out my post on Shure's Blog about OH miking techniques. It's an excerpt from my book. Probably nothing new for the professional but it offers one view on the subject?it just so happens to be my view! http://blog.shure.com/...

I agree with Nick on the compressing cleaner GTRs but I don't like to compress dirty, heavy GTRs. I do parallel compression almost always on dirty GTRs though. I think it brings out the "thump" from the cabinet while allowing the attack and front end of the GTR to remain mostly untouched. I have use...

While it's a well-known trick when using a Pultec, the simultaneous boost/cut at 30Hz goes a long way toward shaping the low end. It clears out more of the mud and leaves the low thumpy stuff. You really have to play with the boost and cut levels to find the sweet spot though. Try your best to ignor...

Thanks Greg. Happy to be here.

I look around here now and then but don't usually feel compelled to comment. This post, however, sounded too familiar! I should try and participate a bit more, huh?

That lag happens when you do those big Pultec boosts mostly because you are accentuating a resonance in the drum that exists at the boost frequency. It's not as noticeable in the drum until you boost it, obviously, but it's still there. You can certainly muffle the drum a bit more but I would move t...
