"we'll take your demo ideas and make a polished song" doesn't seem so different from conventional producing, to me... It is in that you're not involved in the process and it's done remotely. You whisper in a certain direction and the rest is carried by professional 'others'. I generally imagine tal...

Consider a fretless guitar. Heard a fretless banjo in concert last night. We were all knocked out. I'm not an innovator and wouldn't know where to begin but that is a great idea. My primary talent is good taste. I went with nail polish and it seems to work. Thanks to all for the advice here. The fr...

Is hiring a studio to produce your ideas a common service?

This could be a useful service if you like the studio's work. Is this becoming more common? You come up with an idea and give it to others to polish remotely?

here's a something i copied from another site: "This one major limitation of the SSD technology presents some problems: Only 4Kb blocks can be erased at a time. Changes to data cannot be overwritten, but is rather written as ?new? data Blocks can (and usually do) have cells that are not used thus w...

Is the latency with USB mics monitoring AND recording?
In other words, can you use a USB mic in a multi-track project successfully?
I'm considering a second mic for monitoring, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.

I can't imagine that they'd like about the nickel content of their strings. I think you're overthinking this. (I'm a big time overthinker, so I know it when I see it.) It's your frets, dude. Or maybe you're allergic to something other than nickel, or in addition, or it's not an allergy. But I don't...

Anyone confront a hypo-allergenic electric guitar?
Nickel is tearing my fret-hand up. The culprit is strings or frets. I was using Markley Blue Steels, which obviously contain nickel. I asked Fender and their 350s contain trace nickel. Same with GHS steel strings. Only Ernie Ball professed nickel-free Slinky strings (2248s). Alas, I put them on to a...

And all that being said, I am a huge Reaper fanboy these days, and while it is not actually free, it is quite inexpensive ($60 for a hobbyist/student license, $250 for a professional one), and the trial version is permanently uncrippled (contributing to the widely-held notion that it's free softwar...

Opinions on the best free sequencer?
I'm in Timbuktu with a new box. No software installed save Audacity. Can anyone recommend a free sequencer?
I'm a Cakewalk/Sonar user, but I just need something basic that will run on Windows 7 Starter. Gracias.

the only thing i'm semi-confident of is that it's the same sound. there's obviously some kind of filter sweep. i figured sting is a bassist, and bauhaus were minimalists (though they did have other sounds than guitar, bass, drums), so it's probably a bass? if it were a guitar, we'd hear it more often....

What is the sound at the beginning of the Police's Synchronicity II and Bauhaus's Mask?
Is that from a bass?

i suppose i was musing possibilities. i know enough to ask the question, but not enough to realize how complex it is. it would be nice, but i imagine if it were possible we'd see it in applications. i could try masking, but the one thing about the headphones is it doesn't feel like you're listening ...
