Compressors are kind of a different thing (single compressors with stereo strapping jacks are cool!), but when it comes to pre's I always figured, if you like the pre and you want to record a lot, why not have two? Then you can record two different mono sources with a really good pre for each, or h...

I only have a couple pairs in the studio, and mostly because I want to use more than one at a time rather than using them in stereo. I find that having two many stereo pairs in a mix starts to defeat the purpose of having a nice wide image, all the side information starts to cloud up real quick and ...

the DIYRecordingEquipment kits are great. I have a pair of their passive DIs and they're some of my favorites.

You've got the basic idea though. Level and impedance. Once those are sorted you're good to go. Sometimes it's just nice to have a fancier tool so you can hit the sweet spot.

I do what Chris does, essentially. Give it some distance and the moving around will matter less. I can't stand close mic'd tambourine anyway :) Usually I tap it with something real quick on the way in (1176 set at full fast maybe) just to control it a bit, but it's not always necessary. Our room sou...

I use eq on my mix bus all the time :) but our listening environment is pretty damn good and I'm extremely comfortable with it. No reason not to give it a shot! high quality stereo graphic eqs are hard to come by. There's a thread all about graphic EQ and what it does well (and poorly, and different...

Ha.

Yeah, not much you can do to get drum rattle out, particularly if the snares were left on.

I'm getting ready to start taking apart all our kits and stuffing cotton balls in all the lug casings to try and get the things to shut the hell up.

Most any cardioid that doesn't do the large-capsule front-and-back trick will just use small ports around the back of the diaphragm. The time delay for sound getting to the back, along with some acoustic resistance (some kind of fabric usually) creates the directional pickup pattern. That's how ess...

I've had the same response. Every one I ever bought or used broke. Finally I gave up on them and I just use synths as midi controlers, but that doesn't really help you out for live shows. Also that last time I really tried a bunch of them must have been seven or eight years ago. I would say that I c...

With white noise you could do what you're looking for with any bandpass filter with a CV input and an expression pedal, as long as you're not afraid to tune it by ear. If it needs to be digitally tuned the H3000 would do the job but might be overkill. But white noise contains all frequencies equally...

I would go ahead and say that any attempt a new physical format is most likely dead in the water. Fiber goes nearly everywhere in the world this decade. If people are going to package things for the sake of comfort they're going to stick with more nostalgic formats. I'd imagine that's why vinyl's do...

The Radial version is significantly different, so it's certainly worth a shot. I'd try one first and see how it goes.

We have some weird RF issues (always that damn Radio Disney), mostly with our Oktava 012's which are no longer even slightly useable, but no issues reamping.

National Recording Supplies are the best. And they'll still deliver next day or even same day if you need it within NYC. http://www.tapes.com

Lower end three ways are really tough. Something about getting a good balance between the crossovers. There are even a bunch of higher end three ways that I don't like as much as their cheaper, lower end two-way counterparts. But there are plenty I love as well (ATC SCM50's deserve a lot of attentio...
